Coming Derby Week! |

Preachinatthebar is by 1997 Kentucky Derby (GI) and Preakness (GI) winner Silver Charm, who was also three-year-old champion colt that year and champion older male the following year. Overall, he hit the board in 21 out of 24 starts, earning $6,944,369, fourth highest at the time of his retirement. He was a very game horse, exemplified in the Kentucky Cup Classic (GIII), where he battled in a memorable stretch-long duel with Wild Rush, eventually finishing in a dead heat. He gave Bob Baffert his first of three Derby victories. His first crop of foals are three-year-olds of 2004. Displaying the class of their sire, his first 21 runners all have either won or hit the board. He had three stakes placed runners in 2003, including Deb's Charm, third in the Alcibiades (GII). This year, his son Consecrate was third in the San Rafael (GII) and second in the WinStar Derby. Silver Charm undoubtedly got some of his competitiveness from his dam, Bonnie's Poker, who finished in the top three 30 times in her 63 race career. Preachinatthebar is the first foal out of Holy Nola, who was also campaigned by Pegram and Baffert. At age two, she won the Great Arizona Futurity Shoot-Out (interestingly, just one day after Silver Charm won the Derby), and at three finished second in the Listed Santa Paula Stakes. She is also a full sister to Bare Necessities, a multiple Grade three stakes winner of the Gardenia at Ellis Park, the Sixty Sails, and the Indiana Breeders' Cup Oaks. Both Holy Nola and Bare Necessities are by Silver Deputy, who was also the sire of Pegram's Kentucky Oaks (GI) winner and multiple champion Silverbulletday as well graded stakes winners Posse, Mr. Jester, and Badge of Silver. Looking at all the Derby contenders first five generations, one would be hard-pressed to find a horse other than Preachinatthebar with more Classic influences from a dosage standpoint, and with the distribution being equal on both sides of his family, the 1 1/4 miles of the Derby should be well within his range.
