READ THE FOOTNOTES chose the same route as Friends Lake and decided to train up to the Derby after a clunker in the Florida Derby. Plenty to like about him despite that poor race last out. He's faster by the numbers than most of his classmates and he has the kind of running style that will keep him near the front and out of trouble. Trainer Rick Violette is a good one and he usually has them ready to go after a layoff. New rider Robby Albarado calls this track home for roughly half the year and the better local riders probably have a slight advantage over the guys who don't ride Churchill a lot. Main question for the son of Smoke Glacken is 'Can he go this far?'. If he can, he's faster than most here and will be a solid price because of the layoff. Not the craziest of longshots. |

Read The Footnotes is by the Gainesway stallion Smoke Glacken, the Eclipse Award winner for champion sprinter in 1997. He had a lifetime race record of 14-10-2-1, with wins in Defrancis Memorial Dash (GII), the Sapling (GII), and Hopeful (GI). From four crops of racing age, Smoke Glacken has sired 12 stakes winners, including Smok'n Frolic, winner of the Cotillion Handicap (GII) and Demoiselle (GII), and current three-year-old Bachelor Blues, who took the Summer Stakes (GII-C) at Woodbine. Overall, his progeny have earned over $9.6 million. Read The Footnotes is out of the dam Baydon Belle, who was winless in eight starts in England. She has had five foals, all to race, with the subject horse being the only winner. Baydon Belle's family does have a good deal of stamina, through the Lyphard, the sire of the dams of 178 stakes winners, on her sire's side, and Vaguely Noble, winner of the Arc de Triomphe (GI) on her dam's side. Read The Footnotes fourth dam was Native Street, winner of the 1966 Kentucky Oaks.
