Coming Derby Week! Second of June is by Louis Quatorze, winner of the Preakness (GI) in stakes record time and earner over $2 million in his career. He was a versatile racehorse, winning at distances from six furlongs to 1 3/16 miles. He was also second in the ten furlong Breeders' Cup Classic (GI), where he lost by a nose to Alphabet Soup. Finishing just another neck back in third in that thriller was Cigar. Louis Quatorze is inbred to several classic stallion lines in his fourth generation, including Nearco, Native Dancer, Mahmoud, and Bold Ruler. Also, in his third generation on his dam's side is Shenanigans, dam of three stakes winners, including the immortal Ruffian. As a sire, Louis Quatorze has three crops of racing age, with his best performer being Repent, winner of the Louisiana Derby (GII) and the Kentucky Jockey Club (GII), who was also an early favorite for the 2002 Kentucky Derby before injury knocked him off the Derby trail. Whow, the dam of Second of June, won seven of 25 lifetime starts, including two stakes wins. She is the dam of Jack Flash, runner-up in the Jim Beam Stakes (GII), and she is a half-sister to three stakes winners. Although Second of June has a dosage index of 4.33, over the 4.00 threshhold theoretically needed to win the Derby, the presence of many classic winners, including Man O' War in his direct tail-female line, suggest that he should have plenty of stamina to get the Derby distance.
