SMARTY JONES is undefeated and will vie for favortism on race day. The son of Elusive Quality was largely unknown until he left Philadelphia Park last year to ship to New York for the Count Fleet, which he won easily. At that point trainer John Servis put him on the Derby Trail and promptly shipped to Oaklawn Park, where his charge ripped off three impressive wins which included the Southwest, Rebel and Arkansas Derby. That kind of total domination of a major meet doesn't happen very often and it put him in line for a $5 million bonus funded by the owners of Oaklawn if he wins the Derby. Rider Stewart Elliott has been with him all the way and while many will question his lack of Derby experience, he's the top rider at Philly Park year in and year out. Main concern is that he needs to work out a trip and conserve some energy in the early stages to help him stay this extended route. If Elliott can accomplish that, he's probably on the best horse and one thing's for sure. He wants to do it. Would not be surprised if he won the Derby. Smarty Jones is by Elusive Quality, the Gainsborough Farm stallion who sired ten stakes winners in 2003, which made him the leading sophmore sire that year. Among his first crop was Elusive City, who was voted champion two-year-old in France and Great Notion, winner of the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn. While Elusive Quality performed best at a mile or under, there are several distance influences on both sides of his pedigree, including Nashua, through his sire Gone West, and Secretariat and Tim Tam (1958 Derby winner) from his sire's dam. On his dam's side, he comes from the same family as Anees, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner. Elusive Figure won nine of 20 lifetime starts, including setting a world record for the mile on the turf: 1:31 3/5 in the Poker Handicap (GIIIT) and a track record at Gulfstream: seven furlongs on the dirt in 1.20. He also had a strong affinity for the Churchill Downs surface, winning three allowance races here. Smarty Jones is only the second foal from his dam, I'll Get Along, to race; the other being a maiden winner in a dirt route race. I'll Get Along was also primarily a sprinter, winning nine races going short, but was never worse than third in nine dirt attempts, including a win in the William Parker Stakes going a mile and 70 yards at the Meadowlands. She is by champion sprinter Smile; but again, there are plenty of distance influences on Elusive Figure's female side. Smile is by In Reality, winner of the Florida Derby (GI); his second dam, Dont Worry Bout Me, is by 1975 Derby winner Foolish Pleasure; and seven generations back in his tail-female line is La Troienne; one of the most important mares of 20th century to whom numerous Derby winners, champions, and dams of champions can be traced. Dosage Index:3.40
