ST AVERIL is a talented horse with bad feet and many clockers have not liked how he has trained since arriving. He did run very well in his first two preps but the wheels came off in the Santa Anita Derby and trainer Rafael Beccera readily admits that his feet were bothering him coming into that race. The lightly-raced son of Saint Ballado was training in protective shoes at Santa Anita but will race in normal shoes on Derby Day, which may make him a little more ouchy than he has been training. Hard to win the Derby when you aren't 100% and the general concensus is that this guy is going the wrong way right now. Best strategy is to wait until foot problems are behind him. St Averil is by Saint Ballado, a Canadian bred son of Halo, who himself sired two Kentucky Derby (GI) winners: Sunny's Halo (1983) and Sunday Silence (1989). In his nine race career, Saint Ballado compiled a 4-2-0 record in a nine race career, winning the Arlington Classic (GII) and the Sheridan Stakes (GIII). Saint Ballado, who died in 2002, has sired over 35 stakes winners, including Captain Bodgit, winner of the Florida Derby (GI) and Wood Memorial (GII), Yankee Victor, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap (GI), Sister Act, winner of the Hempstead Handicap (GI), and Flame Thrower, winner of the Del Mar Futurity (GII). St. Averil is out of Avie’s Fancy, winner over $400,000 and ten races in a 21-race career. She was primarily a turf route mare, but did also win going long on the dirt. Her wins included the Boiling Springs Handicap (GIII), the Matchmaker Stakes (GII) and the restricted Spicy Living Handicap. She is a half sister to several dirt route winners, including Gulliver, who took the Listed Paterson Stakes as a three-year-old. She is the dam of one other foal to race, Our Cozzette, winner of the New Jersey Futurity for two-year-old fillies. St Averil's pedigree is full of distance influences, including Hawaii, Gallant Man, Halo, Mahmoud, Tom Fool, and Turn-To, whom he is inbred to 4x5 in the tail male line through his sire and dam-sire lines. Dosage Index: 1.53
