THE CLIFF'S EDGE is the early favorite for Derby 130 and deservedly so after a game win in Keeneland's Blue Grass Stakes last out, where he bested Lion Heart and Limehouse with a determined late run. Has a lot going for him with two wins over the track, both stakes races, and his trainer has won the Derby twice with Strike The Gold and Go For Gin, so he certainly knows what it takes. His win in the Blue Grass generated one of the highest speed figures of the season and his speed figure pattern indicates that he's likely to 'pair up' his breakthrough effort. His breeding is more speed oriented but that's not how he looks or runs. Sire Gulch already has one Derby winner in Thunder Gulch and seems to get more stamina than he himself had. Works since the Blue Grass indicate that he is still on edge and he's looked great going over a track he relished as a juvenile. All systems go here but he will carry the curse of the favorite. |

The Cliff's Edge is by Gulch, 1998 champion sprinter and winner of 11 graded stakes in his 32-race career, including the Breeders' Cup Sprint (GI), Wood Memorial Invitational (GI), and twice taking the Metropolitan Handicap (GI). He is the sire of 1995 Kentucky Derby (GI) winner and champion three-year-old colt Thunder Gulch and Nayef, a multiple Group I race winner and champion three-year-old in Europe. In all, this son of Mr. Prospector has sired over 50 stakes winners with his runners earning in excess of $59 million. While Gulch was known as a sprinter, probably due to the influence of his sire, his tail-female line can be traced to the great stallion Lexington, a horse that set numerous American records in the two to four mile range, and also possibly the most influential sire of the 19th century. The Cliff's Edge is out of Zigember, who was unplaced in four lifetime starts. She is a half-sister to Turker, who started a remarkable 100 times, 74 of those in route races, and had 30 lifetime wins. Zigember's dam, Red Ember, was a stakes winner at three, taking the California Oaks and earning over $215,000. She is also a half-sister to the multiple stakes winner Comedy Act, who took the Santa Barbara Handicap (GI) at age five. While The Cliff's Edge dosage is considered high at 4.00, there is plenty of evidence in his pedigree to suggest that he can get the Derby distance.
