WIMBLEDON is a striking gray horse who won the Louisiana Derby before flopping in his final prep, the Santa Anita Derby. The son of Wild Rush doesn't have an overly impressive speed figure pattern but he does have a great new jockey in Jerry Bailey, who had his pick of about five Derby mounts. No secret that Bob Baffert knows what it takes to win the big one and it may be a blessing in disguise that his charge got a clunker out of his system at Santa Anita. Owner Jim McIngvale is on a nice run right now with this horse and an older horse named During after working his way through a lot of bad luck during his early days in the game. His horse has trained very well since arriving at Churchill and seems to handle the surface with ease. Should provide solid betting value and he could absolutely be a factor with one of his better tries. |

Wimbledon is by Wild Rush, winner of the Illinois Derby (G2), the Metropolitan Handicap (G1), the Kentucky Cup Classic Handicap (G3) (where he dead heated with Silver Charm in a memorable stretch-long duel), and the Carter Handicap (G1). He finished with an 8-0-3 record from 16 starts, earning nearly $1.4 million. This second crop stallion is the sire of four stakes performers, including 2003 Canadian two-year-old champion Judith's Wild Rush, winners Fencelineneighbor (Barona Stakes at Del Mar), Friendofthefamily (Scottsdale Stakes at Turf Paradise), and Quinton's Gold Rush. His two-year-old colt was the sales topper at the recent February Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company at Calder sale, going for $1.6 million. He is currently standing stud in Japan. Wimbledon is the third foal of racing age out of his dam Strawberry Clover. One other has started, going winless in five attempts. Strawberry Clover herself won four races in 27 lifetime starts. She primarily competed in sprints, where she got all of her victories. She is a half-sister to the top sprinter Mining Burrah, who won the Gravesend Handicap (G3) and the Coaltown Breeders' Cup Handicap (G3). Wimbledon, with his relatively high dosage of 5.00, should get some stamina influence from his broodmare sire, Darn That Alarm. He was a very sound and consistent horse, hitting the board in 29 of 42 lifetime starts. As a three-year-old, he won the Fountain of Youth (GII), and was third in the Florida Derby (GI) and Hutcheson (GI) and has sired eleven graded stakes winners to date. Tragically, he died in a barn fire at Meadowbrook Farm in Ocala, Florida on May 6, 2003.
