Future Wagering Suspended On Second Of June; Fountain Of Youth Runner-Up Injured, Knocked Out Of Kentucky Derby
By: John Asher

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (February 15, 2004) - Betting on Fountain of Youth runner-up Second of June (#16) in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager ("KDFW") was suspended Sunday by Churchill Downs officials after the colt was declared out of consideration for the Kentucky Derby (Grade I) by trainer Bill Cesare.

Cesare told Daily Racing Form correspondent Jay Privman that Second of June, the runner-up in Saturday's Fountain of Youth (GII), came out of the race with a leg injury that would require surgery. Second of June, who lost by a neck to Read the Footnotes after a stretch-long duel, suffered a condylar fracture of a cannon bone.

The Form reported that the injury would require the insertion of screws to promote healing and that the colt would likely be on the sidelines until the end of the year. The surgery on Second of June was scheduled for Sunday at Gulfstream Park.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager rules state that betting on a wagering interest must be suspended if it is determined that an illness or injury would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Derby.

KDFW Pool 1 odds on Second of June stood at 15-1 at the conclusion of wagering on Saturday evening. A total of $13,661 had been wagered on the colt through the first three days of the four-day pool. Betting on Pool 1 was set to resume at noon (all times Eastern) on Sunday and the pool will close at 6:30 p.m.

Total wagering through the first three days of Pool 1 totaled $266,308. Real time odds and other information on the Kentucky Derby Future Wager may be found on the Internet at www.kentuckyderby.com.
