Gradepoint Scores First Stakes Triumph In Risen Star
By: Mark Hoard

Gradepoint made his stakes debut a winning one in the Risen Star (GIII) at Fair Grounds on Sunday. The win was the third in a row for the Neil Howard trained dark bay colt, who previously took an entry level allowance race, also at Fair Grounds, and a maiden race at Keeneland last October.

Gradepoint, under jockey Robbie Albarado, was allowed to settle in last out of the gate, while Nightlifeatbigblue was alone on the lead for the first six furlongs. The fractions were moderate; the half mile in 48:37 and three-quarters in 1:13.45. Gradepoint was asked to pick it up in the far turn, but in midstretch he was still five lengths from the lead. Mr. Jester, the race favorite, and Polish Rifle were also closing during the stretch run. Polish Rifle gained the lead momentarily, but Gradepoint fought gamely between horses as they neared the wire, finishing a half length in front of Mr. Jester, with Nightlifeatbigblue hanging on gamely for the show spot. Polish Rifle weakened late to finish fourth.

The $90,000 winner's purse to owners W. S. Farish and Mt. Brilliant Stable LLC increased his lfetime earnings to $144,285. Gradepoint has now won three of four, his only loss being a third place effort in his first lifetime start. As the 9-5 second choice, Gradepoint paid $5.80, $2.60 and $2.10. Mr. Jester returned $2.40 and $2.10 to place. Nightlifeatbigblue paid $2.10 to show. The $2 exacta was worth $12.80.

The field was reduced to six with the scratch of Shiloh Bound.
