Lion Heart Blazes Five Furlongs At Keeneland

(April 20, 2004) -- Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor's Lion Heart continued his preparations for Kentucky Derby 130 by firing a "bullet" five-furlong workout of :58.40 over a "fast" track at Keeneland. Exercise rider Jean Claud was up for the work.

"I was very happy with the work," trainer Patrick Biancone said. "I just wanted him to stretch his legs. I was actually going to work him Wednesday but with the weather forecast calling for showers all over Kentucky, I just wanted to move it up a day and not take a chance."

Biancone indicated that he plans to bring Lion Heart to Churchill Downs Monday to "stretch his legs a bit." Lion Heart has a career record 3-3-0 in six career starts and is coming off a runner-up effort to The Cliff's Edge in Keeneland's Toyota Blue Grass (Grade I). Hall of Famer Mike Smith, looking for his first Derby victory, has the mount.
