New Gift Item For 2004 'Art Of The Kentucky Derby' Series Available For Holiday Shopping
By: John Asher

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 11, 2003) - Holiday shoppers looking for the perfect gift for fans of the Kentucky Derby and Thoroughbred racing need look no further than the exciting new collection of gifts and accessories inspired by the work of nationally acclaimed artist Francis Livingston created for the 2004 "Art of the Kentucky Derby" series, the official artwork of the 130th Kentucky Derby.

Livingston's work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Santa Fe, N.M. and the work in which he commemorates the 2004 Kentucky Derby depicts a Thoroughbred and jockey being escorted by a pony and rider into the Kentucky Derby winner's circle. The moment is captured against a backdrop of the historic Twin Spires of Churchill Downs and a perfect spring sky, and is framed by the roses presented each year to the Thoroughbred that wins America's greatest race.

The Kentucky Derby artwork by Livingston was commissioned by JettSport, Inc., the Louisville, Ky.-based sport and event graphics company that is now in its fourth year as the official licensee for Churchill Downs' "Art of the Kentucky Derby" series.

Livingston's memorable painting of Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day will be featured on tickets, racing programs and other officially licensed Kentucky Derby 130 merchandise. Posters and limited edition prints of each year's "Art of the Kentucky Derby" series artwork are always popular gift items during the holidays and the months leading up to the world famous "Run for Roses." But Livington's striking Derby work also adorns and has inspired several other gift items and accessories. They include:

  • A custom-designed tie and pocket scarf for men bearing Livingston's Kentucky Derby image from BlueMoon Artworks and Balance Design.

  • Handmade lavender soaps containing the Derby 2004 image.

  • Coordinated fingertip towels for Derby parties and hostess gifts.

  • Luggage tags bearing the image of the Derby 2004 artwork.

  • A striking line of fashion jewelry created by Louisville-based BlueMoon Artworks that features a charm bracelet and matching earrings.

"Last year we expanded our product line for the 'Art of the Kentucky Derby' series into home décor and accessories and we were very pleased with the results," said Clare Jett, President of JettSport, Inc.

"The public embraced those new products and we're confident that year's items inspired by the wonderful Derby artwork of Francis Livingston will be embraced just as warmly and enthusiastically. Mr. Livingston's work is timeless and we are confident that the posters and products that bear the scene he created to commemorate the 130th running of the Kentucky Derby will be cherished by those that love America's greatest race for many years to come."

The gift items and accessories in the 2004 "Art of the Kentucky" series are now available at several Louisville area retail outlets, including the Kentucky Derby Museum Gift Shop, Von Maur, A Taste Of Kentucky and shops in the Louisville International Airport. The new product line may also be viewed and purchased on the Internet at www.derbyartgifts.com.

The vintage style artwork of American illustrator Laura Smith was featured in the 2003 "Art of the Kentucky Derby" series. Previous artists procured by JettSport, Inc. to create the official Kentucky Derby art include American illustrator Gary Kelley in 2002 and legendary singer Tony Bennett in 2001.
