Injury Knocks Declan's Moon Out Of Kentucky Derby, Wagering Suspended On Gelding In Pool 2 Of Derby Futures

Jay Em Ess Stable's Declan's Moon, the unbeaten 2-year-old champion of 2004, has suffered a knee injury that will take him out of consideration for Kentucky Derby 131 and wagering on the horse in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager ("KDFW") has been suspended.

The Daily Racing Form reported on Friday that Declan's Moon had suffered what trainer Ron Ellis described as a "small, non-displaced" chip in the left knee. Ellis said that the injury was not career threatening, but it would take Declan's Moon is out of the picture for the "Run for the Roses" on May 7 at Churchill Downs. It is not known yet whether the injury will require surgery.

After receiving word of the injury on Friday morning, Churchill Downs suspended wagering on Declan's Moon (wagering interest # 4) in Pool 2 of its 2005 Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Declan's Moon was a close second choice to Afleet Alex after Thursday's first of four days of wagering in the March 10-13 pool. Both horses ended the day at odds of 5-1, but slightly more money had been wagered on Afleet Alex ($6,313) than Declan's Moon ($5,948).

Declan's Moon was the favored individual horse in February's opening KDFW pool. He closed at odds of 9-1 with total wagering of $48,415. The mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individual horses in a respective pool, was the 2-1 favorite in Pool 1, which closed with a record single-pool betting total of $620,362.

There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Betting on Pool 2 is set to resume at Noon (all times EST) on Fri., March 11 and the four-day pool is scheduled to conclude on Sun., March 13 at 6 p.m.
