Workout Schedules Set For Several Derby Contenders
By: John Asher

Monday, April 25 - Closing Argument at Keeneland; Buzzards Bay and Wilko at Santa Anita; Survivalist at Belmont Park
Tuesday, April 26 - Afleet Alex at Churchill Downs; Consolidator (possible) at Churchill Downs
Wednesday, April 27 - Consolidator at CD (if not on Tuesday)
Thursday, April 28 - Sun King at Churchill Downs; Greater Good at Churchill Downs; Greeley's Galaxy at Churchill Downs

AFLEET ALEX - Cash is King Stable's Afleet Alex, winner of the Arkansas Derby (GII), made two Sunday morning trips to the main track at Churchill Downs. He jogged a mile shortly after the track opened at 6 a.m. (all times Eastern) and then galloping two miles after the renovation break. Regular exercise rider Salomon Diego was up. Trainer Tim Ritchey said Afleet Alex would probably work Tuesday and that regular rider Jeremy Rose would be in town Louisville to handle this work.

"He is going to be here Monday and Tuesday and then return over the weekend to stay," said Ritchey, who, like Rose, will be making his Kentucky Derby debut.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Ritchey has requested that media members with questions about Afleet Alex gather at his barn each day at 10:30 a.m. Afleet Alex is stabled in Churchill Downs' Barn 41.

ANDROMEDA'S HERO/BELLAMY ROAD/HIGH FLY/NOBLE CAUSEWAY/SUN KING - Trainer Nick Zito's Kentucky Derby quintet galloped on two fronts Sunday morning.

At Keeneland, where Zito has 25 horses stabled, Andromeda's Hero galloped under exercise rider Megan Smillie.

At Churchill Downs, where Zito has 16 horses under the shedrow in Barn 36, his four other Derby hopefuls - Kinsman Stable's Wood Memorial (GI) winner Bellamy Road, Live Oak Plantation's Florida Derby (GI) winner High Fly, My Meadowview Farm's Florida Derby runner-up Noble Causeway, and Tracy Farmer's Tampa Bay Derby (GIII) winner Sun King - all galloped. Carlos Correa handled the riding duties on Bellamy Road, Noble Causeway and Sun King, and Maxine Correa was on High Fly. Should all five make the starting gate for Derby 131, it would be a first for Zito, a two-time Kentucky Derby winner.

"I think the most I have ever run in a race is three," Zito said. "We had three in the Travers last year and ran 1-2-5 (with Birdstone, The Cliff's Edge and Sir Shackleton)."

Zito said that Sun King would probably work Thursday.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Nick Zito requests that media members who wish to discuss his five Derby 131 contenders to gather at his barn each morning at 9:30 a.m. for a question-and-answer session. His horses are stabled in Barn 36.

BANDINI/COIN SILVER/FLOWER ALLEY - Trainer Todd Pletcher added to his Kentucky Derby arsenal Saturday when Peachtree Stable's Coin Silver won the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (GII) at Keeneland.

"That was a pleasant surprise," Pletcher said of Coin Silver's victory. "He's a colt that seems like he has been improving. We thought his allowance race at Gulfstream (on April 2) was maybe a little better than it looked. I think the key (Saturday) was that he got away poorly, got behind and came from off the pace, which maybe he has been wanting to do. I think the wet track didn't hurt anything, either.

"Right now, he is going to start in the Kentucky Derby, unless something happens between now and then to tell us not to."

Jockey Javier Castellano rode Coin Silver in the Lexington, but he is commited to ride Bellamy Road in the Derby. Pletcher said that Derby riding assignment on the son of Anees "is yet to be determined."

Coin Silver was scheduled to arrive at Churchill Downs Sunday morning from Keeneland to continue his Derby preparations.

Already at Churchill were Toyota Blue Grass (GI) winner Bandini and Lane's End (GII) winner Flower Alley, both of whom galloped 1 ½ miles. Frederic Buscail was on Bandini and Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero, Jr. was on Flower Alley.

CONSOLIDATOR/GOING WILD - Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said that Robert and Beverly Lewis' Going Wild would continue to be pointed toward Kentucky Derby 131 despite his fifth-place finish behind Coin Silver in Saturday's $325,000-added Coolmore Lexington (GII) at Keeneland.

Lukas said that the son of Golden Missile did not handle the muddy track at Keeneland and deserved another shot on Derby Day.

"I've said it for years, but I think it's more true this year - I don't put any stock into what happens over that racetrack," said Lukas. "I told Bob Lewis that we'll run today, but don't even look at it if you don't want to."

The four-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer said that Going Wild came out of the race well and would have one work before the May 7 Kentucky Derby.

"He's training beautifully over this racetrack," said Lukas. "We'll just see what happens with him."

Lukas' other Derby contender - the Lewises' San Felipe (GII) and Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (GI) winner Consolidator - galloped on Sunday. Lukas said the son of Storm Cat would breeze this week, with that move most likely to be scheduled on Tuesday or Wednesday.

GREATER GOOD - Lewis Lakin's Rebel (GIII) and Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) winner Greater Good galloped 1 ½-miles under exercise rider Betsy Couch. Trainer Robert Holthus said Greater Good would breeze six furlongs on Thursday at 7 a.m. with Derby rider John McKee up for the work.

GREELEY'S GALAXY - B. Wayne Hughes' Illinois Derby (GII) hero Greeley's Galaxy returned to the track for a mile gallop before the renovation break with exercise rider Mikki Fincher up. The Mr. Greeley colt is scheduled to work Thursday.

HIGH LIMIT - Mary and Gary West's Louisiana Derby (GII) winner and Toyota Blue Grass (GI) runner-up High Limit galloped over a "fast" surface on Sunday.

The Maria's Mon colt had stayed in the barn and walked on Saturday because of rainy weather and a "sloppy" track. Trainer Bobby Frankel expects the colt to turn in his final pre-Derby breeze next Saturday or Sunday.

KENTUCKY DERBY 131 NOTES - Trainer Dallas Stewart said on Sunday that it was "unlikely" that Overbrook Farm's Storm Surge, third in Saturday's Coolmore Lexington (GII), would run in the Kentucky Derby. "I haven't talked with Overbrook about it, but I'd think it would be highly unlikely that they would want to run," said Stewart. "He came out of the race good and that's the main thing." ... A decision on the Kentucky Derby (GI) status of Phipps Stable's Survivalist will probably be made on Monday following a workout by the Shug McGaughey-trained colt at Belmont Park, according to assistant trainer Buzzy Tenney ... Trainer Jeff Mullins said Fog City Stable's Buzzards Bay is scheduled to work six furlongs on Monday at Santa Anita. The Santa Anita Derby (GI) winner will board a flight for Churchill Downs on May 4. Jockey Mark Guidry will have the Kentucky Derby call on the son of Marco Bay.
