Amonte, 47, became the trainer of Achilles of Troy and the entire Paraneck Stable in mid-March after former trainer Jennifer Pedersen and owner Ernie Paragallo parted ways. Amonte had been working for Pedersen as an exercise rider and assistant trainer since August 2005. His father, Frank Sr, is still an active jockey at age 70. Amonte is a Brooklyn native and has been around horses most of his life, working for various outfits on the New York circuit. |
Twenty-nine year old Ramon Dominguez, a native of Venezuela, began riding at age 16 in his home country. He moved to the United States in 1995, riding at Hialeah Park in Florida. He won 312 races in 2005, good for fifth place nationally, with his mounts earning in excess of $10.7 million, placing him tenth for the year. He also led the national standings in both 2001 and 2003, when he had 431 and 453 victories, respectively. 2004 saw him score his first Breeders' Cup victory aboard Better Talk Now in the Breeders' Cup Turf (GI). And in 2004, he won the Isaac Murphy Award presented to the jockey with the highest winning percentage (28.3) for the year by the National Turf Writers Association. Dominguez has ridden two Derby starters, Tapit in 2004 and and High Limit in 2005. He has won three riding titles in Maryland, where he currently resides. He splits his riding time between Delaware, Florida, and New York. |
New York investment banker and computer software executive Ernie Paragallo, conducts his Thoroughbred racing interests under the name Paraneck Stable, for which he began buying bloodstock in 1991. Paragallo runs his Thoroughbred breeding operation from his Center Brook Farm in Climax, New York. Paragallo's advisors include East Coast horseman Ben Perkins, Sr. and New Jersey bloodstock agent Baden P. (Buzz) Chace. Paraneck's best horses inlcude Unbridled's Song, who was the favorite in the 1996 Kentucky Derby, Artax, 13th in the 1998 Derby and would go on to win the 1999 Breeders' Cup Sprint (GI), and Grade two winner New York Hero. Unbridled's Song and Artax are two of the eight stallions that stand at Center Brook. |
Glen Hill Farm is the racing and breeding namesake of Leonard Lavin, who is the founder, chairman of the board and chairman of the executive committee of Alberto-Culver company, which was launched in the mid-1950's. In late 2004, Leonard stepped aside as chairman of Alberto-Culver, which employs more than 18,000 workers world-wide. Glen Hill’s homebred One Dreamer won the 1994 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (GI) at Churchill Downs. Born in 1919 in Chicago, Lavin attended his first Derby in 1928. Glen Hill was created approximately 40 years ago when Lavin purchased former Greentree Stud near Ocala, Florida, where he currently houses approximately 30 broodmares. Like his farm, Lavin has been loyal to his trainers, using the late Willard Proctor for many years, and then employing his son Tom, his current trainer. |

Achilles of Troy is a son of the deceased stallion Notebook, who passed away in 2003. As of this writing, Notebook had sired 44 stakes winners, headlined by the filly Spoken Fur, winner of the Mother Goose (GI) at Belmont Park; Delaware Township, a top-class sprinter who won the Forego (GI) and DeFrancis Memorial Dash (GI) among his seven stakes wins; Booklet, winner of both the Fountain of Youth (GI) and Holy Bull (GIII) while on the 2002 Kentucky Derby trail; and Three Ring, a multiple graded stakes winner who finished last in the 1999 Derby after her saddle slipped. Notebook is a son of Well Decorated, by Raja Baba, and represents one of the last successful lines of the Bold Ruler sires. Notebook is out of a Tom Rolfe mare from the immediate family of El Prado and Drone. Notebook was probably at his best when running at a mile, but did win the 1 1/16 mile Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) as well as being good enough to place in the Fountain of Youth (GII) and Florida Derby in his sophmore season.
Achilles of Troy is the fourth runner in as many foals from his dam Steamy Recipe. While two others are winless, the first, Guidebook, a full sister to Achilles of Troy, was stakes placed and a winner of five of nine route races on the main track. Steamy Recipe was unraced, out of the mare Really Cooking, making her a full sister to the good Texas bred Captain Countdown, who won or placed in stakes in each of his five racing seasons. Bearly Cooking was an interesting horse herself; she won stakes from ages four through seven, made 70 starts in her career, and probably had her best year during her final season of racing.
Steamy Recipe's sire Relaunch has had a substantial impact on the breed in the last 20 years. He was both leading sire and broodmare sire: his son Skywalker won the Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) and he is also the broodmare sire of Horse of the Year Ghostzapper. Achilles of Troy is a complete outcross in his first four generations, and the presence of distance influences Ribot and Tom Fool on his male side and In Reality on his female side say that he should be able to handle the 10 furlongs of the Derby without a problem.
