Shirreffs was born June 1, 1945 in Leavenworth, Kansas, and grew up in New Hampshire, where his family ran a small breeding operation. Later he worked as an assistant to trainers Brian Mayberry and Bill Spawr before he took out his trainer's license in 1978; winning his first stakes two years later. He trained privately for Marshall Naify's 505 Farm from 1994-2000. Afterwards, he opened a public stable in southern California. He recently took over the training of A.P. Warrior just prior to his win in the San Felipe. Top horses he has trained include Manistique, Radu Cool, Borodislew, Bertrando, Starrer, and Swept Overboard. He's had but one starter in the Kentucky Derby, but made the most of it when Giacomo scored a 50-1 upset to take the Roses in 2005. He also saddled Hollywood Story to a fifth place finish in the 2004 Kentucky Oaks. |

Nakatani, 35, is a native of Covina, California. He was introduced to racing at age 16 by his father, who was a Japanese-American born in a WWII internment camp and spent time at Santa Anita when it was a relocation camp. Corey began galloping and breaking horses for the legendary Johnny Longden, and began riding in 1988 at Caliente Racetrack, moving to Southern California the next year. He has been a fixture on the southern California circuit since, winning riding titles at Santa Anita, Hollywood, Del Mar and Oak Tree. While he hasn't won the Derby in his eleven tries, he has won the Kentucky Oaks twice: 1991 on Lite Light and 1996 on Pike Place Dancer. He also teamed up with trainer Craig Dollase to win the 1998 Breeders' Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs with Reraise. He is married to Craig Dollase's sister Michelle. |
Stanley Fulton, born February 15, 1931 in Cumberland, MD, is the former head of Anchor Gaming and a noted philanthropist. He built his fortune by founding a small gaming equipment manufacturing company that eventually was bought by Anchor Gaming. He bought Sunland Park from Anchor in October 2000, and with the help of casino gaming, purses have increased over 100% since the purchase. Fulton spent more than $2 million in 2002 purchasing young horses. He currently owns about 100 racehorses, based in California, Kentucky and his home track of Sunland Park. Fulton has had some bad luck with the Derby: He had to scratch St Averil due to recurring foot problems the morning prior to the running of the 130th Kentucky Derby. |
Fleming is one of Australia's top breeders. His 100 acre farm known as Tyreel Stud dates back to the early 1800's. Sons Dean and Paul, who also board mares at the farm, have over 30 broodmares, with 15 of them being Group one placed. Tyreel annually sells all their foals at auction, achieving great success due to the quality of broodmares they house. The Fleming family has been involved in racing since the 1930's, when Jim's father owned and operated a stud farm. Fleming made his money in the grocery business, eventually purchasing Tyreel in 1986. Tyreel also purchases broodmares internationally, keep some in the United States to foal and sell their offspring as well. |

A.P. Warrior is by Horse of the Year and champion A.P. Indy, a son of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and the leading sire in North America in 2003. He sired 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, as well as champion Tempera, Grade I winner Golden Missile; millionaire Symboli Indy; Grade I winner Aptitude and Grade II winners Suave and Lu Ravi. A 2000 Racing Hall of Fame inductee, A.P. Indy won eight of eleven starts, including the 1992 Belmont (GI) and Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) while on his way to that year's championship honors. He was the morning line favorite for the Kentucky Derby, but was scratched the morning of the race due to a hoof injury. He raced in Will Farish's Lane's End Farm colors, where he also currently stands stud. A.P. Indy also has a very prominent female family. His dam, Weekend Surprise, was a multiple graded stakes winner and produced nine winners as a broodmare, including Summer Squall, winner of the Preakness (GI), Welcome Surprise, winner of the Dogwood (GIII), and stakes placed horses Honor Grades and Weekend In Seattle.
A.P. Warrior is the first foal from his dam Warrior Queen, who was a stakes winner at two in Europe, where she competed exclusively save for one start in the States, also during her first campaign. She was weighted as the best sprinting filly in England and Ireland. Warrior Queen is also a half-sister to Folkstone Park (Dixieland Band), who sold for $1.15 million, the highest priced for the sire that year, as a yearling in 2000. Her second foal by Storm Cat is a filly which was sold at Keeneland in September 2005 for a sale record for a filly of $3.8 million.

The connections of A.P. WARRIOR had the advantage of picking first in the post position selection Wedenesday evening. Trainer John Shirreffs chose post 10. Shirreffs said, "We got number 10 with Giacomo last year and it worked out very well." Chances are his colt won't be 50-1 as Giacomo was, as he's been kind of a wise-guy horse in the days leading up to the Derby. Like Giacomo, Shirreffs waited until late before shipping in from California, arriving this past Tuesday. The $1.3 million yearling auction purchase has made quite an appearance in the mornings, which could lead to his price dropping a bit come post time. Since Shirreffs took over his training two starts back, he's scored a nice win over Point Determined and Bob and John in the San Felipe (GII) and was third to Brother Derek and Point Determined in the Santa Anita Derby (GI). The latter race was a bit odd, as he tried to press the free-running Brother Derek, which was a no-win situation. He held on gamely and was probably second best that day. He won't have to worry about loose front-runners in the Derby, and Nakatani should be able to secure good position, about six to eight lengths off the lead, going into the first turn. He has the look of a horse that is on top of his game, but note that he's finished behind Brother Derek in all three races he's faced the Derby favorite. Has a huge chance to hit the board, and if the pace falls apart, can take home the top prize. |
