Born January 23, 1951 and a resident of Unionville, Pennsylvania, Matz has a lifelong history with horses. A successful national and international riding career has earned Michael Matz the distinction of being the all time leading money winning rider and member of the Show Jumping Millionaire's Club with over $1,700,000 earned in prize money. A three-time Olympian and four-time Pan American Games veteran, Matz has won the U. S. Equestrian Team (USET) Show Jumping Championship a record six times. He earned a Team Silver medal in the Atlanta Games and was also honored by being asked to carry the U.S. flag in the closing ceremonies that same year. Matz has turned his horsemanship to throroughbreds in recent years, and has continued his success in the latest endeavour. He scored his biggest victories with Kicken Kris, who won the 2004 Arlington Million (GI) and 2003 Secretariat (GI) and is now standing stud in Japan. Barbaro would be Matz's first Derby starter.

: Derby History
Edgar Prado is a native of Lima, Peru and hails from a racing family - his father is a trainer and two of his eight brothers are jockeys. He dominated the Maryland racing scene for years with multiple riding titles at both Laurel and Pimlico, but in the summer of 1999 decided to shift his tack to New York. He won 1,000 races over a two-year span in 1997-1998, to join Chris McCarron and Kent Desormeaux as the only riders to accomplish that feat and led the nation in wins with 536 in '97, 474 in '98, and 402 in '99. He was second nationally in earnings last year, when his mounts won over $18 million for the second consecutive year. He also won 299 race in 2005, finishing in seventh nationally while winning at a 20% clip. Prado won the Kentucky Oaks in 2003 on Bird Town and the Belmont twice: Birdstone (2004) and Sarava (2002). He has ridden in the past six Derbies, with his best finish a third on Peace Rules in 2003. |
Lael Stables is the namesake of Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the breeders of Barbaro, live in West Grove, Pennsylvania. They have been involved in racing for approximately 30 years. Their best horse prior to Barbaro has been Grandera, whom they campaigned for two seasons prior to selling him to Godolphin. Grandera would go on to win multiple Group One stakes for his new owners. Gretchen Jackson serves on the Thoroughbred Charities of America board of directors. Lael Stables, run by the couple, is a full service breeding operation that also brakes yearlings, does lay-ups and foaling. They have been breeding thoroughbreds since 1978; they currently house 20-30 mares, and they also have about 15 horses in training. |

Barbaro is a son of Dynaformer, 21, who has improved as a sire with age, as he has produced the core of his top performers late in his stallion career including Perfect Drift (GI), Riskaverse (GI), Starrer (GI), Film Maker (GI), Sand Springs (GI), Collect the Cash (GI), Critical Eye (GI), as well as millionaires Dynever and Mystery Giver - all of whom have reached the peaks of their respective careers within the past five years. Those runners have propelled him to being one of the top five leading North American sires in four of the last five years. While more noted for his turf offspring, his versatility as a sire of both turf and dirt horses should not be overlooked, as witnessed by Perfect Drift and Dynever. A durable racehorse, he ran 30 times, scoring all his stakes wins at age three, including the 10-furlong Jersey Derby (GII) and setting a track record for 1 1/8 miles (1:48.40) in the Lucky Draw Stakes.
Barbaro's dam, La Ville Rouge, was also talented on dirt and turf, placing in 11-furlong grade two events on both surfaces: Nassau County (dirt) and Sheepshead Bay (turf). Barbaro is just her second foal to race, and the first, Holy Ground, was a listed stakes winner. La Ville Rouge is a half-sister to stakes winners Green Alligator, who was fourth in the Kentucky Derby; and the multiple stakes winner Lucky Lavender Gal.

BARBARO should vie for post time favoritism with Brother Derek, and there's no way to fault those who back this undefeated son of Dynaformer. After winning on turf, in the slop, and on fast main track, he's shown he's got all the tools to be a great horse. Surprisingly, he hasn't got the attention that some others have in recent days despite the impressive credentials. His 46 second workout here this past Saturday was as visually overwhelming as the time indicates. One thing that hasn't been brought up is that there is a distinct possibility that he will be mixing it up early with the other speedy types. If that happens, he will get the class test when they hit the quarter pole, and, to date, his competition, other than Sharp Humor, has not been very noteworthy. Dark bay colt is in a master's hands in the name of trainer Mike Matz, who, if he should win, would be the fourth consecutive conditioner to win with his first Derby starter. The ideal trip would be to sit just behind the first flight without getting too far back. Should make a big impact and will force the others to do their best running if they are to beat him. |
