Southern California based Hendricks is a Los Angeles native, born there December 5, 1958. He grew up in Rancho Santa Fe, near Del Mar Race Track. Training is in his blood, his father and uncle were both trainers. His first job on the track was working for the late Willard Proctor; he also spent nine years as an assistant to Richard Mandella. Going out on his own in 1987, he's saddled winners of nearly 70 stakes, among them almost 30 graded events, including sending out Smooth Player to upset Excellent Meeting in the 1999 Hollywood Oaks (GI). Hendicks was paralyzed from the waist down following a July 7, 2004 motocross accident, but returned to his Del Mar barn just six weeks later to resume training full-time. Brother Derek would be Hendricks' first Derby starter. |
: Derby History
A native of Panama City, Solis reached national prominence in 1986 as the regular rider of multiple grade one stakes winner Snow Chief. He won his first California riding title in '92 and rode Dare and Go to an upset win over Cigar in the '96 Pacific Classic. He won eight Grade I races in '97 in addition to the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. He won his first Breeders' Cup race in 2000 aboard Kona Gold and has ridden the following major stakes winners: Megahertz, Sweet Return, Singletary, Pleasantly Perfect, Kona Gold, and Johar. Based in southern California, Solis has won 20 meet riding titles overall, including six consecutive at his home bases during 1996-97. His 2005 stats showed him earning $9,647,743 from 729 mounts, good for 14th place nationally. He finished second in the Kentucky Derby three out of four years with Captain Bodgit in 1997, Victory Gallop in 1998 and Aptitude in 2000. |
Peacock was born April 9, 1927, Calgary, Alberta, Canada and still resides there. He is the owner of Peacock Energy, Inc. He bought his first Thoroughbred in 1971. He runs his horses mainly in Southern California, Vancouver, British Columbia and Edmonton, Alberta. He campaigned Don'tsellmeshort, the 2003 California-bred champion juvenile male who is a full brother to Brother Derek. Peacock has never had a Derby starter. |
Caldwell, a resident of Eagle Point, Oregon, got involved in racing through her late husband Tom, who was Keeneland's director of auctions from 1975 through his death in 2001. Their sons Scot and Cris also work at Keeneland, carrying on their father's tradition. Along with her husband, Mary had a few stakes winners in the 1980's and were a recipient of the Oregon TOBA award for leading owner and breeder during that period. Their Oregon farm is home to a small number of broodmares, including the dam of Brother Derek, Miss Soft Cell, who also foaled his full brother, the stakes winning Don'tsellmeshort. |

Brother Derek is by the California sire Benchmark, who got a late start in his racing career, making only one start at age three. He was lightly raced for a horse that was still running at age seven, finishing with a 7-2-4 mark from 16 starts. His stakes all came at age six, when he took the Goodwood Breeders' Cup (G2), the Del Mar Breeders' Cup (G2), and the San Bernadino Handicap (G2). He is a half-brother to Tranquility Lake, multiple grade one winner of eleven races and over $1.6 million, and as a broodmare whose second foal brought $9.7 million at auction at Keeneland. Unlike many sons of Alydar (Alysheba, Strike the Gold, Criminal Type, Turkoman), Benchmark has turned into a pretty solid stallion. In addition to Brother Derek, Benchmark has sired the grade one winner Silent Sighs (Santa Anita Oaks), multiple stakes winners A to the Z and Don'tsellmeshort, a full brother to Brother Derek. Thus his four stakes winners come from four crops of just over 200 foals. He currently stands stud at Martin and Pam Wygod's River Edge Farm in Buellton, California for a fee of $7,500.
Brother Derek marks the second time his unraced dam Miss Soft Sell has foaled a stakes winner - his full brother Don'tsellmeshort won several California-bred stakes at two and was third in the Laz Barrera Memorial (GII). Another foal, Swissle Stick, who sold for $600,000 as a two-year-old, is also stakes placed. Overall, she is the dam of six foals to race, all winners. Though she did not race, Miss Soft Sell's dam Solamente Un Vez, who was also bred by the Caldwell's, was a stakes winner at Bay Meadows and in Canada, bankrolling over $125,000 for her career.

BROTHER DEREK was a bit unlucky when he drew selection spot 16 in the post position draw order. His connections had the option of choosing near the rail or on the outside, and opted to go outside with post 18. That was probably the smart move; if they had picked the inside and the break didn't go well, he might have lost all chance from the outset. With the outside draw, jockey Alex Solis will have a chance to get a good position in the first run down the long Churchill stretch. An interesting battle could loom with Lawyer Ron just to his inside in post 17. If this pair of headstrong colts try to outduel each other early, it could change the tactics of the entire race. More realistically though, Sinister Minister (#4) and Sharp Humor (#9) will be on the front end. Hendricks has insisted all along that his horse doesn't need or want the lead, and the thought here is that he is right on target. Post 18 is not a hindrance and should actually fit perfectly with the type of race he needs to run to win. His prep races have been as impressive as any horse in the race, he has been handled beautifully for his entire career; his jockey is the best in America that has never won the Derby. Since arriving in Kentucky, the California bred has looked like a winner during his morning training and in the paddock schooling sessions. Don't be fooled by those who say he is too speedy or hasn't had any tough races, he is the horse to beat and anything at 5-2 or more is a gift. |
