Hollendorfer, born June 18, 1949, is the fifth winningest trainer in North American racing history. The northern California based trainer has won an amazing 30 straight training championships at Bay Meadows and 26 at Golden Gate Fields, as well as winning training titles at Arlington Park (2001) and Thistledown (2004). He came to California in the late 1960's, working as a groom at Bay Meadows and for trainers Jerry Dutton and Jerry Fanning before taking out his trainer's license in 1979. Hollendorfer has trained many major stakes winners, including Event of the Year (winner of the Jim Beam Stakes and El Camino Real Derby in 1998); King Glorious (Hollywood Futurity, 1988; Haskell Invitational, 1989); Lite Light (Kentucky Oaks, 1991; Coaching Club American Oaks, 1991); and Pike Place Dancer (Kentucky Oaks, 1996; California Derby, 1996). He has had one starter in the Kentucky Derby; Eye of the Tiger, who finished fifth in the 2003 Derby. His other two potential Derby starters, Event of the Year and Globalize, were both scratched in the days leading up to the big race due to injuries suffered at Churchill Downs. |
: Derby History
Baze, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, was inducted to the Thoroughbred Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1999. He is the second-winningest rider, behind the immortal Laffit Pincay, Jr., in thoroughbred racing history. He has over 9,000 victories in a career that began in 1974 at Yakima Meadows in Washington state. Like his father Joe before him, Baze has won riding titles at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. However, he far surpassed his dad in numbers, winning 33 and 27 titles at the tracks respectively. He has led the nation in victories seven times: in 2002 (431 wins), 2000 (412), 1996 (415), 1995 (448), 1994 (415), 1993 (410), and 1992 (433). He won a special Eclipse Award in 1995 for being the first jockey ever to win 400 or more races in a year for four consecutive years. He also earned the Isaac Murphy Award, a national honor which goes to the jockey with the highest win percentage (minimum 500 mounts), for nine straight years (from its inception in 1995 through 2003). Throughout his brilliant career, Baze has had but one Derby mount, Semoran (14th in 1996).

Redekop, 71, was born in Ukraine and emigrated with his family to Canada after World War II. He is the majority owner of Cause to Believe, and still resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he has developed real estate since 1958. He has been in the racing business since 1968, Peter Abruzzo of Chicago purchased a 25 percent share in Cause to Believe from Peter Redekop earlier this year. Abruzzo was bit by the racing bug at age 11 when he saw Dr. Fager set the world record for the mile in the 1968 Washington Park Handicap. Abruzzo is a successful northwest suburban Chicago businessman who has had horses with Hollendorfer for several years, including the stakes winner U.S.S. Tinosa. Abruzzo founded Modern Tuxedo, which he grew from his hometown area to a nationwide chain of over 500 formalware stores. |
: Derby History
Overbrook Farm was founded by the late William T. Young, who passed away on January 12, 2004. A native Lexingtonian, Young was a businessman, farm owner, and noted philanthropist. Young contributed $5-million to the University of Kentucky for its main library, named in his honor. He founded W. T. Young Foods, manufacturer of Big Top peanut butter, later called Jif after he sold the company to Procter and Gamble. Overbrook has grown from 110 acres at its inception to over 2,300 today. Young has bred over 60 stakes winners, including 1996 Derby champ Grindstone, who was retired just days after his biggest score. He also won a pair of Preaknesses and Belmonts with Tabasco Cat (1994) and Timber Country (1995). Young was a director emeritus of Churchill Downs and the Breeders’ Cup, and a member and former steward of The Jockey Club. Since his passing, the farm has been run by the partnership of his son Bill Jr, his daughter Lucy Young-Hamiltion, and grandson Chris Young. In addition to housing nearly 100 broodmares, Overbrook stands eight stallions, including world's leading sire Storm Cat and the aforementioned Grindstone.

Cause to Believe is a son of the 1995 2-year-old champion colt Maria's Mon and is gray in color like his sire. As a racehorse, Maria's Mon was precocious, capturing 4-of-5 starts as a juvenile including a pair of Grade I wins - a feat no other juvenile accomplished that year - in the Champagne and Futurity at Belmont Park. He retired prematurely due to injury after only two starts at three and was sent to stud at Pin Oak in 1997. Maria's Mon became an immediate success at stud, siring 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos in his first crop, which secured himself a place in history as a stallion. Besides Monarchos, he has sired 21 additional stakes winners, most notably High Limit (GII), See How She Runs (GI), and leading 2006 Kentucky Oaks contender Wait a While (GII). Maria's Mon comes from the same female family as Marfa, winner of both the Santa Anita Derby (GI) and Jim Beam Stakes (GII) at age three, and he possesses several stamina influences in his immediate family, including Majestic Light, Buckpasser, Caro and Naskra.
Cause to Believe is the third foal from his dam Imaginary Cat, an unraced Overbrook homebred. She has produced one other winner, Counter Punch, who was 1 for 13 routing on the main track. Imaginary Cat is a full sister to Katz Me if You Can, a multiple graded stakes winning filly who earned over $400,000 in her career; and a half sister to the listed stakes winner Country Romance. Their dam Cuddles was herself a very classy racehorse, winning the Hollywood Startlet (GI) at two and the Oaklawn Breeders' Cup Handicap (GIII) at four.
Through his female line, Cause to Believe is related to top-notch horses such as Buffythecenterfold (winner of the Sorrento (GII)); millionaire Tap to Music; Northern Afleet, sire of Afleet Alex; Canadien 3-year-old champ Square Angel; Kentucky Oaks (GI) winner Seaside Attraction; and European champion and Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Swain.

CAUSE TO BELIEVE is one of the forgotten horses in the Derby 132 cast after finishing a well beaten third to Sweetnorthernsaint in last month's Gr. II Illinois Derby. The Maria's Mon colt reportedly didn't like the deep surface at Hawthorne, and if you throw out that effort he sports some mighty good form on the west coast. His Cal Derby win over Sinister Minister looks even better than it did live now that Sinister Minister came back to win the Blur Grass in a runaway performance. The only real knock on him is the fact that he has yet to run a triple digit Beyer speed figure, which is generally a requisite to qualify as fast enough to win the Derby. While he certainly has the right closing style to fit this race considering the probable quick early pace, it is also questionable whether or not he will have the same closing punch stretching out another eighth of a mile. He has drawn well to the outside post (No. 16), where he figures to tuck in towards the rear under jockey Baze, who is a veteran rider that is capable of navigating a decent trip. It is hard to judge by his training whether or not he likes the Churchill Downs surface or is sitting on a big effort because he is one of the more lazy horses in his early morning training, and that has lessened the interest on Cause to Believe by much of the racing public. Trainer Hollendorfer is a very sharp and successful conditioner and he was confident enough in this colt to supplement this colt as a late Triple Crown nominee and point for the Derby. While the feeling is that he is not as fast as the Brother Dereks and Sweetnorthernsaints in this year's class, Cause to Believe certainly has a license to turn in a huge stretch run that lands him on the board at 50-1. Although that is how he'll be best used on most tickets, there is a base of Cause to Believe fans that feel he can win this, and if you're a believer you'll get a very juicy price. Still think his best makes him a trifecta or superfecta booster.
