Jimmy was born in Bayshore, LI, in 1959, and was introduced to racing through his father, Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens. After high school graduation, Jimmy worked for his father as an assistant for two decades, then went out on his own in 1997. Jerkens tied Gary Contessa as leading trainer at the 1999-2000 Aqueduct inner track meet. He has trained noted stakes winners such as Big EE, Lager, Thomas Jo, and Silentlea. In addition to Corinthian, he also trains top-notch horses such as Artie Schiller, who won the 2005 Breeders' Cup Mile (GI), Smokey Glacken, Voodoo, and Snake Mountain. |
Castellano was born Oct 23, 1977 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. His father and uncle were riders in his home country, where the young Castellano first rode in 1996. He began riding in North America in 1997, and his brother Abel rides on the mid-Atlantic circuit. He was leading rider at Calder on two separate occasions, as well as at Hialeah and Aqueduct. In 2005, he won 206 races with $12,507,012 in purses, which was good for sixth nationally. His biggest career victory was in 2004 the Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) aboard Horse of the Year Ghostzapper. He won the 2003 Clark Handicap (GII) for trainer Nick Zito at Churchill Downs. His lone start in the Kentucky Derby came last year, a seventh place finish aboard favored Bellamy Road. |
Donald Little, Jr. is the President of Centennial Farms, a racing syndicate created in 1982. A lifelong horseman with training in every aspect of the game, he has worked alongside veterinarians and is an expert on thoroughbred bloodlines. Mr. Little is an active member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and attends all the major sales in North America, supervising the purchase of Centennial’s racing stock. In its 24-year history, Centennial Farms horses have won or placed in over 60 graded races with earnings in excess of $10-million. Top horses include Lil's Lad, 1998 Fountain of Youth winner, Rubiano, the 1992 Eclipse Award Sprint Champion, and Colonial Affair, the 1993 Belmont Stakes and 1994 Whitney and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner.
In addition to his lifelong involvement with thoroughbreds, he is a world-class polo player that has competed on three different continents at the highest levels of the sport. He played on the University of Virginia polo team, has served on the Board of Governors, Executive, Tournament and Nominating committees for the U.S. Polo Association and currently serves on the Handicap Committee.
Centennial Farm is one of just two racing syndicates that have won a Triple Crown event (Colonial Affair) and Eclipse Award (Rubiano) with different horses.

Corinthian is by Pulpit, who currently stands stud at Claiborne Farm, which also raced and bred the flashy bay stallion. Pulpit burst onto the 1997 Triple Crown scene with stunning maiden and first level allowance victories. He went on to take the Fountain of Youth (GII) and finish second in the Florida Derby (GI) at Gulfstream. He completed his prep races with a victory in the Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland. The Kentucky Derby, in which he finished fourth against one of the stronger fields in that race in the last ten years, turned out to be his last race due to an injury suffered during the Run For The Roses. With six crops of racing age, Pulpit has sired 20 stakes winners, including Cigar Mile (GI) winner Purge; Stroll, who took the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (GI); 2002 Eclipse Juvenile finalist Sky Mesa, winner of the Hopeful Stakes (GI) and the Breeders’ Futurity (GII); and Tapit, winner of the Wood Memorial (GI) and 2004 Kentucky Derby favorite. He also has the 2006 Derby contender Laity, also owned by Claiborne Farm. Pulpit is by A.P. Indy, the 1992 Horse of the Year and Derby favorite of the same year, but he was scratched the morning of the race when he was found to have a foot bruise. Through his second dam, Pulpit is related to grade two winner and leading sire Tale of the Cat and 2001 2-year-old champ Johannesburg.
Corinthian is out of Multiply, which makes him a half-brother to her first foal Desert Hero (Sea Hero), who won the San Rafael (GII) and was third in the Santa Anita Derby (GI) while on the 1999 Kentucky Derby trail. Multiply's four offspring between Desert Hero and Corinthian have been less successful: two were unraced and the two other had one win apiece. The unraced Multiply is a daughter of 1989 Belmont Stakes (GI) winner Easy Goer; indeed her third generation sires read like a who's who of influential stallions: Raise a Native, Buckpasser, Bold Bidder and Nijinsky. In addition to the stellar sires, Multiply is a direct descendant of the top producing mare Number. Number produced several stakes horses, including the grade one winning Jade Robbery; Numerous, who won the Derby Trial (GIII) at Churchill Downs; and Chequer, a grade three winner at age four.
As impressive as the lineage of Multiply is, Corinthian's male side is no less impressive. Besides being a direct descedant of Seattle Slew through Pulpit, other top class horses to appear in his pedigree are Mr. Prospector. Secretariat, Nashua and Honest Pleasure. With such excellence on both sides of his pedigree page, Corinthian is as well-bred a horse as there is among the 2006 Derby contenders and should find no problems in handling the distance if he makes it to Louisville.
