Albertrani, 48, is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He's been involved in racing since his teens, working first as a hotwalker and groom for his uncle, trainer Jack Abatenarco. He was a jockey for about four years, riding in New York and New Jersey, but eventually wound up as an assistant trainer for Bill Mott. His work drew the attention of the powerful Godolphin outfit, and in 1995 he moved his family to Dubai, becoming the top assitant to Saaed bin Suroor. Working for the Godolphin outfit took him to racecourses all over the world with top class horses such as Street Cry, Imperial Gesture, Sakhee and Breeders' Cup Turf (GI) winner Daylami. Albertrani returned to the United States in 2003 as a private trainer for the Darley Stable. The following year he opened a public stable with the blessing of his primary owners. He won his first grade one with Baletto in the 2004 Frizette. Deputy Glitters would be his first Derby starter. |
The 21-year-old Lezcano is currently the leading rider at Tampa Bay Downs. Lezcano graduated from the Laffit Pincay, Jr. Jockey School in his native Panama. He began riding at age 16 and rode two years in his home country before coming to the United States in March, 2004, starting his career at Gulfstream Park. Since coming to the States, Lezcano has also rode at Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands, finishing in the top 10 at both tracks. His biggest win to date came aboard R Lady Joy in the $500,000 Delaware Oaks (GII). His win percentage of 21.6% in 2005 was among the tops in the nation. |

Deputy Glitters is a son of $1.9 million earner Deputy Commander. Trained by Wally Dollase, Deputy Commander won two grade one races, the Travers and Super Derby, both at 1 1/4 miles. He was also second, to Horse of the Year Skip Away, in the Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) at the same distance. Deputy Commander is himself a very well-bred horse; by Canadian Horse of the Year and prolific sire Deputy Minister and out of the multiple graded stakes winning mare Anka Germania, a turf route specialist. Deputy Commander has six crops of racing age, with ten stakes winners, including champions in Saudia Arabia and Jamaica. His leading earner to date has been the Japan-based Grab Your Heart, while American audiences will be more familiar with his son Ten Most Wanted. This colt also won the Travers and Super Derby after a rough trip in the 2003 Kentucky Derby. Deputy Commander is also the sire of current Derby hopeful Red Raymond.
Deputy Glitters is one of four foals from his dam Glitters. Of the two that are of racing age, Deputy Glitters is her lone winner to date. A daughter of the top sprinter Glitterman, Glitters was also at her best going one turn. She was listed stakes placed at three and four and earned all of her wins on the dirt going short while posting a 0 for 9 record routing on the main track.
Deputy Glitters is interesting in that he is a complete outcross, meaning no horse appears more than once, in the first five generations of his pedigree, not seen too often in today's Thoroughbred. With the substantial sprint influence on his female side, his ability to get the Derby distance could come into question, but his Dosage number does fall below the 4.00 cutoff that predicts a horse's ability to get the ten furlongs. Note that none of the Dosage Index sires appear until the fourth generation of his pedigree, owing to some dilution of their influence.
Dosage Index: 3.00 |

DEPUTY GLITTERS is another that falls into the category as the forgotten 3-year-old due to his bad Wood performance in the slop last out. The colt's two worst lifetime efforts came over a sloppy track, and trainer Tom Albertrani has told anyone that would listen that his 3-year-old doesn't like the off going. If you can look past those efforts, Deputy Glitters had a very solid spring at Tampa Bay Downs, decisively defeating early top Derby contender Bluegrass Cat in the Tampa Bay Derby after running a game second to that rival in the Sam F. Davis Stakes. He is one of 12 that possesses a triple digit Beyer speed figure, and he should relish the 1 1/4-mile distance being by Deputy Commander. It is hard to tell where he fits into the pace scenario, as he has been in early contention in all of his better performances, however he must settle into the second or third flight to be successful in here with the likely blitzing pace scenario. It is unclear whether he is really as good as the best sophomores or if he was a horse for course at Tampa Bay Downs. A late arrival to Churchill Downs for the Derby, Deputy Glitters only had a slow maintenance breeze over the surface this past Wednesday, so he is another that hasn't shown his cards in the a.m. training up to the race. The feeling is that several of these are faster than Deputy Glitters and look more attractive on paper, but he certainly wouldn't be the worst stretch for longshot players at around 70-1. Looking elsewhere though.
