Dettori was born on December 15, 1970 in Milan, Italy. He is the son of Gianfranco Dettori, who was 13 times champion jockey in Italy. The younger Dettori has been riding since age 13, when he left school to pursue the profession. He moved to Newmarket, England in 1985, where he began riding for trainer Luca Cumani. He was named champion apprentice rider in 1989 and has been champion rider in Britian three times since. His association with Godolphin began in 1994, riding multiple Group One winners for the UAE rulers since that time. Dettori has the distinction of riding all seven winners on the card at Royal Ascot, one of the most competitive race meet in England, on Sept. 28, 1996. His ventures to the States have netted him four Breeders' Cup victories, but his lone mount in the Derby was a sixth place finish aboard China Visit in 2000. |
: Derby History
The inspiration of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Maktoum family's private racing stable was named in honour of the Godolphin Arabian, who came from the desert to become one of the three founding stallions of the modern thoroughbred. For more than ten years now, Godolphin has set out from Dubai to win the world's best races and this initiative has been rewarded with 125 Group/Grade One wins, with 17 of these being achieved in America or Canada. Godolphin has had five starters in the Derby from 1999-2002, with its best finisher being China Visit, who was sixth in 2000. Some of the best horses campaigned by the Godolphin stable include Swain, Daylami, Dubai Millennium, Fantastic Light, Halling, Lammtarra and Balanchine.

Robsham, who passed away from heart disease at the age of 75 in early 2004, was a prominent real estate developer and philanthropist. Robsham and his wife Joyce were the benefactors of Boston College's Robsham Theater Arts Center. Robsham was the retired president and chairman of the board of Robsham Industries Inc., a real estate development firm based in Framingham, Mass. After Paul's death, the Robsham horses, including Discreet Cat, ran in Joyce's name. She sold Discreet Cat to the current owner after the maiden win at Saratoga. In addition to Discreet Cat, Robsham bred the colt's Gr. I winning dam Pretty Discreet, winner of the Alabama Stakes, and 2005 Matt Winn Stakes winner Razor. |

Discreet Cat is bred to be one of the top horses of his generation. His sire Forestry is a direct descendent, through his sire Storm Cat, of 1964 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Northern Dancer. Forestry raced for only one year, his 3-year-old season. He won seven of 11 starts during the campaign, including the seven furlong King's Bishop (GI) and 1 1/16 mile Dwyer (GII). He was also proven over the Churchill Downs surface, winning an overnight handicap and two allowance races. His lone nine furlong stakes effort was the Haskell (GI), when he was third behind Derby runner-up Menifee and eventual Breeders' Cup Classic winner Cat Thief. Retired to stud after his sophomore season, Forestry has four crops of racing age, with 20 stakes winners to date. Besides our subject colt, his top offspring are Forest Danger, winner of the Carter Handicap (GI) are Teton Forest, Jerome (GII). While most of his get are considered better at shorter distances, he has become increasingly noted as a turf sire as well. He may have hit the pinnacle as a stud when his colt brought a world record $16 million at the 2006 Calder Spring Sales auction.
Discreet Cat should get plenty of stamina from his female side. His dam, Pretty Discreet, won the 1 1/4 mile Alabama (GI) at Saratoga. Her sire, the late Claiborne stallion Private Account, was also a grade one winner at the Derby distance. From her six foals to race, Pretty Discreet has produced two stakes winners: Discreet Cat and Pretty Wild, a two-time listed winner that was also second in the Futurity (GI) at Belmont. Pretty Discreet is closely related to 1987 Kentucky Oaks winner Buryyourbelief
As mentioned earlier, Discreet Cat has the bloodlines of some of the greatest horses of all time in his first four generations. The list of classic sire influences include Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Pleasant Colony, Dr. Fager, Damascus, Buckpasser, In Reality and Tom Rolfe. With so many prominent names in his lineage, he should find the Derby distance well within his scope.
