: Derby History
A native of Lexington, Kentucky, McLaughlin now resides in Garden City, New York - the state where his core operation is based much of the year. Married with a son and daughter, McLaughlin also has a residence across seas in Dubai, where he was the leading trainer at Nad al Sheba Race Course from 1994-96. His top clients include Dubai natives Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum of Darley Stable, his brother Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum and prominent local businessman Ahmed al Tayer, along with top American-based syndicate West Point Thoroughbreds. McLaughlin's most notable tutelage came from the long and rich line of assistants for the powerful D. Wayne Lukas stable. He has campaigned such graded stakes winners as Dumaani, Intidab, Seattle Fitz, Randaroo, and Mustanfar. McLaughlin has saddled one Derby starter: Closing Argument was second to Giacomo in last year's Run for the Roses. |
A native of Roswell, New Mexico, Smith was introduced to racing by his uncle, who trained horses, and his father, who rode for a short time in Arizona. He started riding races in New Mexico at age 11 and took out his license when he was 16. He was the leading rider in the country in 1994 with 316 wins, and he has won numerous accolades including the Eclipse Award twice, the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award and the Venezia Award. After eleven tries, Smith won his first Derby aboard 50-1 longshot Giacomo. Some of his best mounts include Holy Bull, Lure, Unbridled's Song, Inside Information, Prairie Bayou and Cherokee Run. |
Terry Finley, who has been involved in the Thoroughbred industry for more than 22 years, is the founder and president of West Point Thoroughbreds, Inc. A graduate of West Point, Finley is a former Airborne Ranger who holds an MSBA from Boston University. He gained hands-on experience working with Thoroughbreds as a teenager and began developing racing partnerships in 1991. His initial acquisition was a $5,000 claimer from Philadelphia Park named Sunbelt. That gelding debuted for West Point Thoroughbreds two weeks later and won for a $6,500 claiming tag. Since that first trip to the winners circle at Philadelphia Park in 1991, West Point Thoroughbreds has syndicated some 90 horses worth more than $9.5 million, with some 25 stakes winners to date. West Point has permanent stables in New York, New Jersey, Kentucky, Florida, Louisiana, and California, with 40-60 horses in training. |
Jerry and Liz are a husband and wife team that breed horses to sell and race. All their mares, babies and lay ups are with Julie Rini at Crowning Point Farm, Paris, KY. Their daughter, Lori Hendrickson, is their trainer. She began training in 1998. They have five other children. The Squyres first horse was purchased for aesthetic purposes on their farm in East Texas. Their first trainer was Tom Amoss. Amoss trained Flashy Bull's mother, Iridescence, probably their most talented horse. They currently have about five horses in training. In addition to the horse business, the Squyres are involved in a cargo control manufacturing company, a manufacturing company making trailer products as well as horse walkers and round pens, etc., and a Logo Wear, Saddle Towels, Jockey Arm Bands manufacturer.

Flashy Bull was sired by 3-year-old champion and Horse of the Year Holy Bull. Undefeated as a two-year-old, Holy Bull won the seven furlong Futurity (GI) and the 1 1/16 mile In Reality Stakes. At three, he won graded stakes from seven furlongs (Hutcheson-GII) to 1 1/4 miles (Travers GI). He ran twelfth as the favorite in the 1994 Kentucky Derby. Flashy Bull comes from his eighth crop of racing age. Holy Bull son's, champion 2-year-old Macho Uno in 2000 and 2005 Kentucky Derby longshot winner Giacomo, are two of 25 stakes winners sired by the gray son of Great Above.
Flashy Bull is out of the Mt. Livermore mare Iridesence. From her two foals to race, Flashy Bull is her only stakes winner. Flashy Bull's first three dams lean towards sprint pedigrees and his fourth dam Queen Louie was 2-year-old champion in Canada. However, with the presence of distance sires such as Intentionally, Grey Dawn, Lyphard and Exclusive Native all in the fourth generation, Flashy Bull's Dosage Index of 3.00 still fits within the theoretical 4.00 cutoff. |

FLASHY BULL was unlucky at the post selection order, getting stuck with the far outside in the 20 horse field. That is a huge disadvantage for a horse that has done his best running from just off the pace. Mike Smith, who won this race last year on another son of Holy Bull, is going to have to use some of his mount's energy to get a good spot going into the first turn. With just a maiden win to his credit, he is taking a huge step forward to pull off a Gr. I win. It could be a bit of karma with the Smith/Holy Bull connection, as Giacomo was a non-winners of two coming into last year's Derby. He has been fairly competitive in the Florida stakes this winter, but the feeling is that he is up against it here. Looking elsewhere for a winner. |
