A native of Lexington, Kentucky, McLaughlin now resides in Garden City, New York - the state where his core operation is based much of the year. Married with a son and daughter, McLaughlin also has a residence across seas in Dubai, where he was the leading trainer at Nad al Sheba Race Course from 1994-96. His top clients include Dubai natives Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum of Darley Stable, his brother Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum and prominent local businessman Ahmed al Tayer, along with top American-based syndicate West Point Thoroughbreds. McLaughlin's most notable tutelage came from the long and rich line of assistants for the powerful D. Wayne Lukas stable. He has campaigned such graded stakes winners as Dumaani, Intidab, Seattle Fitz, Randaroo, and Mustanfar. McLaughlin has saddled one Derby starter: Closing Argument was second to Giacomo in last year's Run for the Roses. |
Edgar Prado is a native of Lima, Peru and hails from a racing family - his father is a trainer and two of his eight brothers are jockeys. He dominated the Maryland racing scene for years with multiple riding titles at both Laurel and Pimlico, but in the summer of 1999 decided to shift his tack to New York. He won 1,000 races over a two-year span in 1997-1998, to join Chris McCarron and Kent Desormeaux as the only riders to accomplish that feat and led the nation in wins with 536 in '97, 474 in '98, and 402 in '99. He was second nationally in earnings last year, when his mounts won over $18 million for the second consecutive year. He also won 299 race in 2005, finishing in seventh nationally while winning at a 20% clip. Prado won the Kentucky Oaks in 2003 on Bird Town and the Belmont twice: Birdstone (2004) and Sarava (2002). He has ridden in the past six Derbies, with his best finish a third on Peace Rules in 2003. |
is owned by Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum, one of five sons of the late Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum's of Dubai. It was the father's idea to take some of his best horses away from England to the desert of Dubai in order to make a racing nation there and to gain acceptance by bringing them back to Europe and the U.S. Darley previously raced under the Godolphin name in the United States, having five starters in the Derby from 1999-2002, with his best finisher being China Visit, sixth in 2000. Some of the best horses campaigned by the Godolphin include Swain, Daylami, Dubai Millennium, Fantastic Light, Halling, Lammtarra and Balanchine.

Henny Hughes was bred in partnership by Liberation Farm, owned by New Jersey resident Rob Whiteley (pictured), Trackside Farm, co-owned by Tom Evans and Pam Clark, and CHO (Commercial Horse Operation), owned by Arthur Seelbinder, the former chairman of the board of Cooker Restaurants. Whiteley has been chief of operations of Carl Ichan's Foxfield for the past 18 years. Foxfield has bred over 140 stakes winners during his tenure, including champion Meadow Star. Liberation Farm itself has bred stakes winners El Corredor, Strong Hope and Roman Ruler. Whiteley's relationship with Evans also goes back some 20 years. The Evans and Clark breeding operation is located on about 725 acres near Versailles, KY. Trackside Farm was the home to Meadow Star and 1985 Breeders' Cup Distaff champ Life's Magic. Seelbinder left his job with the Cooker in 1999 to become a full-time breeder. Seelbinder keeps some of his 40 mares at Trackside Farm. |

Henny Hughes is by one of the hotter young sires on the market in Hennessy. Another of the sons of Storm Cat who has gotten off to a good start at stud (Giant's Causeway, Tale of the Cat), Hennessy has 47 stakes winners from just six crops. He finished 2005 ranked second on the leading sires of two-year-olds, behind only Giant's Causeway, who sired nearly twice as many juveniles as did Hennessy. He sired the 2001 two-year-old champ Johannesburg, who was undefeated in seven starts and is now at stud at Coolmore along with Hennessy. Other top offspring include the grade one winners Madcap Escapade and Harmony Lodge and grade two winners Distilled, Keats, and Silver Tree. Hennessy raced nine times as a two-year-old, winning four times, taking the Hopeful (GI) and Hollywood Juvenile (GII) before finishing second to Unbridled's Song in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (GI). Retired after that race, he was thought to have great potential at stud, but some questioned his ability to get stayers or older runners. However, his female side has several stamina (Tom Fool, Needles) and turf (Hawaii) influences which have shown up in his runners such as Silver Tree.
Meadow Flyer, dam of Henny Hughes, has thrown eight winners from nine foals to race, with our subject colt being the lone stakes winner. However, only one of the eight has won going a route of ground, and with Meadow Flyer being a daughter of Meadowlake, she would be expected to have offspring that favored sprints. Meadowlake, who passed away last November, was a very fast horse who was undefeated in three starts, never going more than 6 1/2 furlongs. Like her sire, Meadow Flyer raced just briefly, winning once in her two starts, with a second in the listed Pasedena Stakes. Her dam, however, ran 14 times, winning nine races, including the First Flight Handicap (GIII) at age four.
