: Derby History
A native of Lexington, Kentucky, McLaughlin now resides in Garden City, New York - the state where his core operation is based much of the year. Married with a son and daughter, McLaughlin also has a residence across seas in Dubai, where he was the leading trainer at Nad al Sheba Race Course from 1994-96. His top clients include Dubai natives Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum of Darley Stable, his brother Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum and prominent local businessman Ahmed al Tayer, along with top American-based syndicate West Point Thoroughbreds. McLaughlin's most notable tutelage came from the long and rich line of assistants for the powerful D. Wayne Lukas stable. He has campaigned such graded stakes winners as Dumaani, Intidab, Seattle Fitz, Randaroo, and Mustanfar. McLaughlin has saddled one Derby starter: Closing Argument was second to Giacomo in last year's Run for the Roses. |
Jara had been riding professionally in his native Panama, where he won 58 races, since he was 14. He came to the United States at age 16, in 2004. Jara was born into the sport; his grandfather and father were both jockeys and had him attend the Laffit Pincay riding school in his homeland. He began his U.S. riding career at the Aqueduct winter meet, and has remained on the New York circuit. His idols as a young rider were Hall of Famers Pincay, Jerry Bailey and Angel Cordero, who has been an advisor to the young Panamanian since coming to the States. Jara would be making his first Kentucky Derby start. |
H.E. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum of Shadwell Farm has built one of the top global racing empires of recent times. Sheikh Hamdan is Dubai's Deputy Ruler and Minister of Finance and Industry. Opened in 1984 in Lexington, Shadwell has bred nine classic European race winners, headlined by Arc de Triomphe (GI) victor and Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) runner-up Sakhee. The racing operation is known for its global campaigning of racehorses and has around 300 horses in training. The farm houses seven stallions, including the multiple champion Swain and British Horse of the Year Dayjur. Sheikh Hamdan was honored in a London ceremony earlier this year by the British Horseracing Board Flat Racing Awards when he was named Champion Owner of Great Britain for 2005. Shadwell has never had a Derby starter. |
Skara Glen Stables owned by the father and son team of Stanley and Ira Gumberg of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ira is President, Chief Executive Officer and director of J.J. Gumberg Co. A University of Pittburgh alumnus, he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1975, Gumberg is a member of the board of visitors of Pitt’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and is a 1984 alumnus of the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School. |

Jazil is by Seeking the Gold, who has sired five champions and six millionaires. His champions include Dubai Millenium, Heavenly Prize, Catch the Ring and Flanders. Overall, this son of Mr. Prospector has sired 72 stakes winners, 43 graded stakes winners, and over 110 stakes horses from 14 crops. Standing at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky, Seeking the Gold raced in the Phipps colors, winning eight races and placing second six times in 15 lifetime starts. He won the Dwyer and Super Derby, both Grade One events, as well as running second in the 1988 Breeders' Cup Classic to Alysheba. While he raced on the dirt, his top two money earning offspring, Dubai Millenium and Seeking the Pearl, where champion turf horses in Europe. He is also the sire of leading Kentucky Derby contender Bob and John.
Jazil is out of the Deputy Minister mare Better than Honour. Jazil is her third foal, and the second to race. Better than Honour was fairly precocious, winning the nine furlong Demoiselle (GII) at age two. At three, she placed in the Acorn (GI), Mother Goose (GI) and Comely (GIII). She is also a half-sister to Turnberry Isle (IRE), a stakes winner on the turf in Ireland at two. Their dam, Blush with Pride, was one of the better race mares in the early 1980s. In addition to winning the 1982 Kentucky Oaks (GI), she won or placed in seven other stakes.
Jazil's tail-female line is loaded with class. Through his first three dams, Jazil is related to Xaar, champion 2-year-old colt in Europe; Aldebaran; champion sprinter in the U.S.; Good Journey, a multiple graded stakes winner on the turf; the multiple grade one winner Denon; Breeders' Cup Mile (GI) winner Spinning World; multiple champion and leading European sire El Gran Senor; and Compliance, sire of Fourstardave and Fourstars Allstar.
Jazil is a complete outcross in his first four generations, and the majority of his stamina influences (Buckpasser, Nashua, Native Dancer) appear on his sire's side of his pedigree.

JAZIL is one of the deep closers in the Derby 132 cast, and there is no secret on what he will do from his rail post. Jockey Fernando Jara, a young rider who will be competing in his first ever Derby, will take back and save ground from the start and will have the daunting task of weaving through the majority of the field when he unleashes Jazil for his late rally. A pricey son of Seeking the Gold, Jazil ran very solidly in the Wood Memorial and may have had an opportunity to win it if he hadn't fallen 20 lengths off the pace down the backstretch. His final three furlongs was run in a solid 36 and change, which was much faster than other deep closers like Steppenwolfer finished in their final respective preps. He has been visually impressive in the flesh all week at Churchill Downs training up to the Derby, looking better than his stablemate Flashy Bull in an accompanied workout, and it is conceivable to believe that Jazil is sitting on a huge effort. The setup should have trainer McLaughlin licking his lips. He figures to get an ideal early quick pace to set up his late kick, and the 1 1/4-mile distance will certainly fit him perfectly. The primary concern for Jazil is still obvious - and it is whether or not Jara can negotiate running room through most of the field in front of him when that combo is ready to put in their closing bid. They will need significant racing luck and Jara will have several points in the race where he'll have to make some crucial decisions on whether to splits horses through a closing hole or lose ground advancing wide, which is where a rider with no Derby experience is at a big disadvantage. It is very easy to see him making an impact on this race if he gets clear sailing, but it is hard to see Jazil getting a clean trip weaving through 15-18 horses, all the way from the far turn to the finish line. Your call. |
