Bob and his wife Bonnie split their time on their Kilkerry Farm just west of Hot Springs at Royal, Arkansas and in Louisville. |
: Derby History
Before McKee, 24, became one of the one country's top young jockeys, he was delivering pizza in his hometown of Hamersville, Ohio, near Cincinnati. McKee rode his first winner May 27, 2002, at River Downs and won the riding title there, smashing Hall of Fame jockey Steve Cauthen's record for victories by an apprentice. McKee has the same jockey agent, Eddie Campbell, as Cauthen did when he started riding. McKee has won riding titles at Oaklawn and Churchill Downs in the past two years. In 2005 McKee rode 131 winners from 987 mounts, earning $4,543,663. In 2004, he ranked 28th nationally in victories (210) and 29th in earnings ($6 million). He also has been leading rider at River Downs. He rides first call for Holthus. This will be his third Derby mount; he finished 13th on Pro Prado in 2004 and in the same position on Greater Good in 2005. |

Lawyer Ron is by Langfuhr, the Canadian champion sprinter in 1996. While he only won two allowance races in that country during the campaign, he did take both the Vosburgh (G1) and the Forego (G2) the same year. He followed those victories with Grade One wins the next year in the Metropolitan and Carter Handicaps (both as the highweight). With seven crops on the grounds, he has sired 2 champions and 34 stakes winners to date, including Canadian Triple Crown Winner and Horse of the Year Wando, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) runner up Imperial Gesture, and millionaire and multiple graded stakes winner Mobil. He was the 2005 leading sire in America in terms of winners.
Lawyer Ron's dam Donation didn't have much impact on the racetrack; the Kentucky bred daughter of Lord Avie raced four times, retiring without a win. She's done somewhat better as a broodmare, with three named foals to date, all winners. Her 2001 Tejano Run colt, Stetter Jr has won over $200,000 in 35 lifetime starts. The aforementioned Lord Avie has thrown offspring with a penchant for speed; he was 1980 two-year-old champion who could carry his speed to about nine furlongs (he won the Florida Derby at the distance), but that was about his limit. With that and other speed influences on his bottom half of the pedigree, Lawyer Ron will have to draw on his Northern Dancer sire line to carry himself the Derby distance. However, this colt's sire Langfuhr fits the profile of several recent Derby winners who also are by sires that were not considered classic distance influences.

LAWYER RON didn't get the best draw when stuck in post 17, but with a horse that is training and loves running as much as he does, it really doesn't matter where he starts. Riding a six race win streak, longest of any Derby starter, that has seem him win from on the lead and off the pace. Concern comes with his ability to be controlled by jockey John McKee. He seemed to have a bit of a tough time with the headstrong colt in the Arkansas Derby, but it ultimately didn't matter, as he's been able to easily handle all his Oaklawn competition. McKee was seen on the backside this week consulting with retired Hall of Famer Jerry Bailey, never a bad idea. Speed figure gurus point to his numbers as being a cut below the likes of Point Detemined, Brother Derek and Sweetnorthernsaint, but, again, numbers cannot measure desire, which he seems to have a ton of. Wouldn't be out of this world for him to wind up the favorite at 6 p.m. Saturday, but he could end up as high as fourth choice as well. Going to take a stand against, but won't leave him out completely. |
