: Derby History
There is not a name in modern day training more synonymous with the Kentucky Derby than Bob Baffert. A fan favorite with his trademark white hair, Baffert has won three of the last eight Kentucky Derbys, including back-to-back wins in '97 and '98 with Silver Charm and Real Quiet, respectively, before capturing the '02 running with War Emblem. The native of Nogales, Arizona has been a staple in the Derby the past decade, starting a total of 14 horses in the past ten runnings. The late defection of Wimbledon from the 2004 Kentucky Derby field marked the first year since '96 that Baffert was not represented with a starter in the Run for the Roses. Baffert, who grew up grooming and galloping quarter horses, began training quarter horses before converting to Thoroughbreds in 1988 with the support of primary owners Hal Earnhardt and Mike Pegram - both of whom still remain prominent clients. Baffert is a three-time Eclipse Award winning trainer, and has conditioned seven Eclipse Award champions. He is one of only three trainers ("Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons and Max Hirsch) to have won the Derby three times. Only Wayne Lukas and Dick Thompson (4 wins) and Ben A. Jones (6) have more Derby wins than Baffert. |

Bejarano, born June 23, 1982, in Peru, currently lives in Louisville. He went to the races as child in his home country, eventually attending that nation's riding school. Began riding in Peru in 1999, winning an apprentice title the same year. Came to the United States in May of 2002, beginning his U.S. riding career at River Downs in Cincinnati. While it took him about five months to win his first race, he's been a top rider on the Kentucky circuit ever since. He won the Churchill Downs 2004 Spring Meet title, as well as winning titles at Turfway Park and Ellis Park. He capped his success in 2004, when he led the nation in wins with 455, 72 more than his closest pursuer. He currently is riding in New York and on the Kentucky circuit. 2005 was another banner year for the young Peruvian; he finished fourth nationally in earnings, with $14.4 million, capped by a victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (GI) aboard Intercontinental. Bejarano rode his first Derby last year, finishing eighth aboard Andromeda's Hero.

Robert N. Clay, along with his wife Blythe, owns Three Chimneys Farm - a leading Thoroughbred stallion farm located outside of Lexington, KY that is home to such industry leading sires and top former racing stars as Dynaformer, Point Given, Rahy, Wild Again, War Chant, and Smarty Jones. When Clay founded the farm in 1972, he was with Top Yield Industries, later becoming president of that company. In 1984, he oversaw the sale of Top Yield Industries to Cargill, Inc. and from that point on, Clay devoted his time to Three Chimneys. The Three Chimneys Stallion division was built in 1984 and the first stallion to stand was champion Slew o' Gold, in 1985, followed soon by the only undefeated Triple Crown winner in history, Seattle Slew. A native of Mt. Sterling, KY, Clay is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and attended the University of Kentucky and Harvard Business School. He is a member of The Jockey Club and a member of the Board of Directors of the Breeders' Cup, the Keeneland Association and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association. Clay serves as a trustee of The Blood-Horse magazine, and is past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America and is currently secretary of the American Horse Council. Clay also owns a few racehorses, as he campaigned recent graded stakes winner Medallist and now stands him at Three Chimneys. Clay and wife Blythe have two children, Heather and Case. |

Point Determined is from the first crop of recent racing superstar Point Given - the 2001 Horse of the Year after dominant performances in the Gr. I Preakness and Gr. I Belmont Stakes, and Point Determined looks like a carbon copy of his sire with his imposing stature. Point Given is regarded by many as one of the greatest racehorses of modern era, as he bankrolled more than $3.9 million in less than two years of racing before being prematurely injured and retired at late three. A son of 1995 Derby winner Thunder Gulch out of the Alydar broodmare line, Point Given had the size, quality and stamina to be a prototypical Classic performer, and he figures to pass off a significant capability to get most route distances. Point Given's progeny also figure to excel with age, which closely describes Point Determined's form.
Merengue, Point Determined's dam, is a daughter of Broad Brush, which is another strong stamina influence. Merengue campaigned on the Maryland circuit and was a five-time stakes winner around two turns, including scoring her biggest victory in the Gr. III Anne Arundel at Laurel Park. Typical of many of the Broad Brush progeny, she also excelled on an off track, which may assist Point Determined down the road.
With both parents being stakes winners at a route of ground with pedigrees to get better with age, expect Point Determined to display the most quality at Classic distances, and expect him to continue to develop as a 3-year-old and probably not hit his full potential until he hits the handicap ranks as an older horse.

POINT DETERMINED will probably be the wiseguy horse of this Derby as one who is able to rate while others fight for the lead. Also the presence of Rafael Bejarano will lure the bettors this way as he continues to ride scores of winners every time he returns to his New Kentucky Home. Couldn't reel in Brother Derek when second in the Santa Anita Derby but he was visually gaining on the clear winner and it was not a bad final prep at all when you consider that the California tracks are not really fair to those with his running style. Would be great to see the silks of lifetime Derby patron Bob Lewis in the Winner's Circle one more time as they were with Charismatic and Silver Charm and I'm sure Mr. Lewis is hunkering down at a Turf Club Table somewhere in the sky for one last look at his favorite race. Just love the way the race sets up for this horse and he has the karma from his classy owners. Lots to like here at double-digit odds but probably not quite the price he should be. Use this colt on all exotic tickets and consider betting him across as your top pick. |
