Private Vow is from the first crop of Broken Vow, a son of Unbridled, who won the Iselin (GII) and the Ben Ali (GIII) among his nine wins in 14 starts, earning $725,926. With Private Vow leading the way, Broken Vow's offspring won 12 races in 2005, earning $759,022, good for 17th place on the two-year-old sire list. Private Vow is his sire's lone stakes winner as of this writing. Broken Vow did not start at two, but went undefeated at three, winning the Sir Barton Stakes as part of his four race campaign that year. He really broke through the following year, taking four stakes and hitting the board in nine of ten starts. All of his career victories, except one, came going two turns. While it is too early to tell if his offspring will get a route of ground, he is certainly bred on both sides to go long.
Private Vow is just the second foal, and lone winner, from his dam Smooth as Silk. She's a daughter of Deputy Minister, a versatile racehorse who was Canadien Horse of the Year at two and was also a grade one winner in the States at four. He also was a very successful sire, getting over 120 stakes winners during his stud career. Smooth as Silk's dam, Sacque, was a stakes winner as well, taking the River Cities Budweiser Breeders' Cup (GIIIT) at Fair Grounds.

PRIVATE VOW was an early Derby favorite at the end of last year after a successful juvenile campaign that saw him impressively capture an important Grade II race around two turns at Churchill Downs (Kentucky Jockey Club). However, his failed 3-year-old debut in the Rebel will be the biggest thing that will be held against him in the wagering for the Derby. He was fresh that day and a little rank, and he tired badly in the stretch to be a well beaten seventh behind Lawyer Ron. But, trainer Steve Asmussen is a very sharp trainer and he has been pointing this colt very deliberately to get a top effort in the Derby. Private Vow's second race off the layoff was a much improved performance, as he dug in nicely in the stretch to be a respectable third behind Lawyer Ron. The marked improvement seems to be evidence that Asmussen is gradually attempting to have Private Vow in peak form in his third start off the layoff, and judging by the way he has trained at Churchill Downs the past few weeks with a pair of bullet moves, it is probably wise to trust that Asmussen is right on target with this colt. He drew towards the middle and has plenty of tactical speed to finagle a nice stalking trip in the second flight of horses as they go into the first turn, so he is one that projects to have a favorable journey. The biggest knock on this son of Broken Vow is whether or not he can get the classic 1 1/4-mile distance of the Derby, which is something that has many analysts doubting. If you believe he has the wind to go the distance, then he may be the way to go if you're looking for a longshot that is seemingly sitting on a huge effort. Verdict: Worth using at odds that figure to be in the range of 40-1 or so but still not sold that he can take the big prize.
