Lael Stables is the namesake of Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the breeders of Barbaro, live in West Grove, Pennsylvania. They have been involved in racing for approximately 30 years. Their best horse prior to Barbaro has been Grandera, whom they campaigned for two seasons prior to selling him to Godolphin. Grandera would go on to win multiple Group One stakes for his new owners. Gretchen Jackson serves on the Thoroughbred Charities of America board of directors. Lael Stables, run by the couple, is a full service breeding operation that also brakes yearlings, does lay-ups and foaling. They have been breeding thoroughbreds since 1978; they currently house 20-30 mares, and they also have about 15 horses in training. |

Showing Up is a son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Strategic Mission, a grade three winner on the turf at age six and was stakes placed in the River City (GIIIT) at Churchill Downs. He was probably at his best on the grass, but did win several times routing on the main track. He is a half-brother to multiple grade one winning millionaires Sultry Song, sire of 2004 Breeders' Cup Mile (GI) winner Singletary, and the turf route specialist Solar Splendor. His first foals are 3-year-olds of 2006. He has already sired a champion 2-year-old in Panama, with Showing Up is his lone graded winner in the States. Strategic Mission currently stands stud at Questroyal Stud, LLC in New York.
Showing Up is out of a stakes producer Miss Alethia. In addition to Showing Up, her son Gimmeawink (by Elusive Quality) was a listed stakes winner on the mid-Atlantic circuit, earning over $500,000. Miss Alethia didn't stand out on the racetrack, but comes from a strong racing family that includes three stakes performers. She is a daughter of T.V. Commercial, third in the 1968 Kentucky Derby. Showing Up is inbred 4x4 on his dam's side to Alibhai, an unraced colt, bred by the Aga Khan, that would later be imported to the States and would be a top-ten sire eleven different times.
Dosage Index: 3.31. |

SHOWING UP is undefeated in only three career starts and while he is light on experience - he looked wise beyond his starts when seen laying midpack early in Keeneland Lexington's Stakes before drawing off to an authoritative win. Love the way he overcame the Lexington track's speed bias and handled the route with ease. Emerged from the race with a flesh wound but his super conservative trainer will not be here unless the horse is ready to go. If he runs, he has the upside to win but will need some luck and a clean trip in midpack. Rider Cornelio Velasquez has won plenty of big ones and would love to add the Derby to his resume. Trainer Barclay Tagg already has a Derby winner in Funny Cide and should handle the craziness better than most with his low-key demeanor. Horse's lack of experience is the main chink in his armor but he can easily improve enough to be a huge factor in this race. Extremely dangerous so look closely here. |
