In 2002, Asmussen won his first national training title by number of victories, as his outfit saddled an impressive 407 winners. However, he outdid himself in 2004, winning a record 555 races, over 180 more than his closest competitor. He continued his winning ways in 2005, taking 474 races and earning $13.3 million in purses. His training career began with both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses in New Mexico in 1986. He has won training titles at Lone Star Park, Keeneland, Fair Grounds, Churchill Downs, Remington Park, Sam Houston, and Retama Park, and is the all-time leading trainer at Lone Star. He was born into a racing family - his father, Keith, is a former jockey; his mother, Marilyn, is a trainer, and brother Cash was a champion rider in the U.S. and Europe. He has had three starters in the Derby: Fifty Stars (9th, 2001), Private Emblem (14th, 2002), and Quintons Gold Rush (18th, 2004). He also won the 2005 Kentucky Oaks with Summerly. |
A native of Tijuana, Mexico, Flores' first win came at Caliente, Mexico in 1984. He captured his first riding title at a major track in '99 at Santa Anita; he also earned his 2,000th career win that year. Was known as "the king of the bull ring" for years for the success he had at Fairplex Park, where he won six consecutive riding titles (from 1989-'94), as well as winning titles at Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Oak Tree. He joined the Southern California jockey colony in '89 and has ridden such top horses as Chilukki, Mash One, Tuzla, Keeper Hill, Free House, Siphon, and Singletary. He has ridden in seven Kentucky Derbys, most recently finish fourth on Atswhatimtalknbout in the 2003 Derby and sixth on Action This Day in 2004. |
Mike is the owner of The McCarty Corporation, an Austin-based construction company started by his father as a sheet metal company and developed into a general contracting company exclusively serving the U.S. military. Mike McCarty, 58, has owned the construction business since 1982, and he forged into the Thoroughbred horse racing business in 2000 when he bought his first pair of horses at the Keeneland April 2-year-olds in training sale. He currently has eight horses, all stabled with Steve Asmussen, including a pair of top 3-year-olds in Private Vow and Doctor Decherd. |

Storm Treasure is a son of Storm Boot, a stakes-placed sprinter with four wins from 14 career starts. Though he had a fairly inauspicious racing career, he is the sire of more stakes winner in North America than any other son of Storm Cat. Storm Boot's offspring have generally been better sprinting, such as Hurricane Bertie, winner of the Prioress (GII) and Princess Rooney (GIII). However, he has also gotten some that can route, most notably Night Patrol, successful on both dirt and turf. Overall from 10 crops of racing age, Storm Boot has sired 34 stakes winners to date, including one champion (in the Dominican Republic) and the millionaire Bourbon Belle.
Storm Treasure is the first foal from the unraced mare Boogie Beach Blues, a daughter of Cure the Blues. Boogie Beach Blues comes from a very nice family; her dam, the stakes winner Lonely Beach, has produced three stakes winners herself. On the surface, Storm Treasure would seem to be inclined to prefer sprint or mile races. While Storm Boot was a sprinter, he does have plenty of route influences in his pedigree, namely in the form of Secretariat and Round Table. Outdoing them both could well be his second dam Drumtop, a daughter of Round Table. A top-class turf mare from the lat3 1960's, she set four track records at distances from 1 1/16 to 1 1/2 miles. Round Table is also present (in the fifth generation) on Storm Treasure's female side.

STORM TREASURE is sure to be one of the longest shots on the board in the Derby by virtue of the fact that he only has a maiden win to his credit. Trained by Steve Asmussen for owner Mike McCarty (same connections as Private Vow), Storm Treasure impressively broke his maiden over the Churchill Downs strip before returning at three to be a solid runner-up to the highly-regarded Strong Contender in that highly publicized Gulfstream allowance. In his first two-turn try, he ran a very disappointing sixth beaten 17 lengths in the Tampa Bay Derby. But, that surface can be a difficult one for horses that ship in from outside circuits, and obviously Asmussen felt like the colt was good enough for a second chance to enter him in the Gr. I Blue Grass. At 63-1, Storm Treasure ran a very impressive race by rallying on a speed-biased track to finish strongly for second. That effort was overshadowed by Sinister Minister's 12+ length win, however it proved that this son of Storm Boot - generally a speed-oriented sire - could without a doubt handle two turns. Asmussen proclaims that Storm Treasure is the one of two runners he has in the Derby that he is confident can get the 1 1/4-mile distance, which alone is an important factor. Of all the contenders in this year's Derby, Storm Treasure is easily one of the best looking in the flesh. And while it is not a beauty contest, he gives off the impression that there is a lot of quality about him and a lot further room for improvement. He has worked very well at Churchill Downs since his Blue Grass try, and the feeling is that he is sitting on a huge effort. The 19-post obviously doesn't help his chances and jockey Flores is not real acquainted with this beautiful chestnut, however if he can negotiate a decent trip, don't be surprised if he comes rolling late and blows up the tote board on the bottom of the exotics. He is not the worst 75-1 shot to ever run in the Derby and could share with his lifetime best effort. Be warned.
