Maker began his racing career at his father George Maker's stable in his home town near Detroit, Michigan. The young Maker owned his first horse at age 13, winning his first race in which he ran in his name. From a start of walking hots, Mike eventually became an assistant trainer to his father, then owned and trained his own horses for a brief period. In 1993, he went to work for the Wayne Lukas stable as an exercise rider and later an assistant trainer. His time with Lukas included working with such standouts as 1999 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Charismatic and 1995 Derby winner Thunder Gulch as well as multiple other top-class horses. In his time working for Equirace.com, he has trained their Gr. II Hawthorne Gold Cup winner Freefourinternet. Maker would be saddling his first Derby starter. |
: Derby History
Blanc was born in France in 1973 and moved to the United States in 1996. He began his American riding career in southern California, where he achieved quite a bit of success against a top riding colony. More recently, he has split his time between Kentucky and Florida. He is known as a quiet and studious, yet ultra-competitive rider. Coming from Europe, he is also considered very adept at grass race riding. He has had two previous Derby mounts: Ronton, (18th in 2000) and Sort it Out (17th in 2005). |
Equirace.com is run by Ron Peltz, who has been involved in racehorse ownership since 1988 and has maintained a racing stable that has competed on the Midwestern and East Coast circuits. Ron operated Peltz Companies Inc., in partnership with his two brothers, based in Alliance, Nebraska, until August of 2000 when he created his own company, AG Peltz Group, LLC. The company is a large paving contractor that deals in very specialized types of concrete work. Equirace has about a dozen horses in training, including another prominent 3-year-old in Devilofarush. Peltz's best horse prior to his current crop of sophomores was Freefourinternet, a grade two winning millionaire that currently stands stud in Ocala, Florida. |
Bowling, 65, is a native of Asheville, North Carolina. Before becoming involved with Thoroughbred racing some 35 years ago, Bowling owned a car painting and repair business. He is noted as being one of the first sucessful pinhookers (the purchasing and reselling of young horses for profit). Bowling has bred several stakes winners, including Western Pride, winner of the Ohio and West Virginia Derbys. He also bred and co-owned City Zip, the sire of With a City. In addition to his pinhooking operation, Bowling has some horses in training with Kentucky-based Vickie Foley. |

With a City's big win in the Lane's End thrust him squarely in the Kentucky Derby picture. Ironically, With a City is a son of City Zip, who stands stud for a fee of $15,000 at Lane's End Farm in Versailles, KY. City Zip's 3-year-olds of 2006 are from his first crop. With a City is his lone graded stakes winner to date, but he is also the sire of current Kentucky Oaks (GI) hopeful Celestial Legend. 2005 closed with City Zip ranked as the leading freshman sire in terms of winners. That precociousness could be expected given that City Zip himself won four stakes at age two, including an historic sweep of all three of the Saratoga juvenile races (Sanford (GII), Saratoga Special (GII) and Hopeful (GI). A son of the noted speed influence Carson City, City Zip proved best when sprinting. During his 3-year-old season, he would go on to win the Amsterdam (GII) and Jersey Shore BC (GIII), both at six furlongs. He was briefly on the 2001 Derby trail, but a third-place finish in the Fountain of Youth (GI) ended those plans. While his running style definitely favored his sire, he is a half-brother to 2004 Horse of the Year and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper, perhaps one of the most talented routers in the States in the last decade.
The speed influence of City Zip is offset by With a City's dam With a Princess. In 31 lifetime starts, she earned nearly all of her $117,474 bankroll going a route of ground, including runner-up placings in two listed events at age three. A versatile mare in the sense that she was successful on both turf and dirt. With a Princess is a daughter of 1989 Canadian Triple Crown winner, 3-year-old champion and Horse of the Year With Approval who was equally adept on turf or dirt. With Approval is also a half-brother to 1997 Belmont Stakes (GI) winner Touch Gold.
With a City is the sixth foal from his dam. She has also produced another stakes winner in The Daddy, a son of Valid Expectations who took the 2005 Super Derby (GII) at Louisiana Downs. With a Princess herself is a daughter of the nearly quarter-million dollar earner Regal Princess, a winner of multiple stakes on the Florida circuit.
The stamina influences of noted sires such as Blushing Groom, In Reality, Caro, Buckpasser and Vaguely Noble contribute to a solid Dosage Index of 2.27.
