Derby Future Wager
Brother Derek Favored In Final '06 Derby Futures Pool LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 9, 2006) - Cecil Peacock's Brother Derek, who notched his fourth straight stakes victory with a dominant victory in Saturday's Santa Anita Derby (Grade I), stood as the favorite when betting drew to a close on Sunday in the third and final pool of Churchill Downs' 2006 Kentucky Derby Future Wager ("KDFW"). The California-bred son of Benchmark, who is trained by Dan Hendricks and ridden by Alex Solis, closed as the 5-1 favorite among the 23 wagering interests in KDFW Pool 3. A $2 Pool 3 wager on Brother Derek would return $12.60 if the colt wins the 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 6. The defection of Paraneck Stable's Achilles of Troy, who was injured and declared out of consideration for the Kentucky Derby before the pool opened on Thursday, April 6, reduced Pool 3's original roster of 24 betting interests by one. Although Brother Derek scored an emphatic win in the Santa Anita Derby, several Kentucky Derby contenders were close behind on the odds board when wagering in four-day pool closed on Sunday at 6 p.m (Eastern). That group included Lawyer Ron (8-1), winner of the Rebel (GIII) and the likely favorite in $1 million Arkansas Derby (GII); unbeaten Florida Derby winner Barbaro (9-1); Discreet Cat (9-1), unbeaten winner of the UAE Derby (GII); and Sweetnorthernsaint (10-1), who was a 35-1 risk on Saturday, but saw his odds plummet following his romp in the Illinois Derby (GII). The Kentucky Derby Future Wager offers racing fans the opportunity to bet on Derby contenders well in advance of the May 6 Kentucky Derby at odds that could be more attractive than they would receive on Derby Day. It is a minimum $2 wager and a win bet only. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and winning payouts are determined by the odds that are in place at the conclusion of each pool. Wagering in the year's first two pools had already cleared the $1 million mark and business remained strong in the just-completed April 6-9 pool. Kentucky Derby fans wagered $454,743 in Pool 3 to lift total betting in Churchill Downs' three 2006 pools to $1,471,606. The overall total was the third highest in the eight year history of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. The Pool 3 total also ranked as the third-best in that individual pool since the wager was introduced in 1999. Other betting interests that enjoyed solid support in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager included Point Determined (13-1), runner-up in the Santa Anita Derby; First Samurai (13-1), the Fountain of Youth (GII) winner who looms as one of the favorites in next Saturday's $750,000-added Toyota Blue Grass (GI) at Keeneland; Bob and John (13-1), whose odds moved little from his morning line posting of 15-1despite a victory by the Bob Baffert-trained colt in Saturday's Wood Memorial (GI); and Bluegrass Cat (15-1), winner of the Remsen (GII) and another contender for the Toyota Blue Grass. The mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-olds other than the individual horses listed in each pool, had closed as the 3-1 favorite in both the KDFW opening pool in late January and Pool 2, which was conducted in early March. In Pool 3, the "all others" wager closed at odds of 15-1.
