Kentucky Derby On-Track, Off-Track Wagering Records Shattered As 157,536 Witness "Run For The Roses"

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 6, 2006) - Wagering on Saturday’s 132nd Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands at Churchill Downs shattered several records - including a North American mark for total betting on a single race - as a crowd of 157,536 at Churchill Downs and countless fans at simulcast centers across North America saw Lael Stable’s unbeaten Barbaro dominate the “Run for the Roses.”

The attendance mark was the second largest in the history of America’s greatest race. It trailed only the crowd of 163,628 that saw Cannonade with the 100th Derby in 1974 and edged past last year’s attendance figure of 156,435 in the first Kentucky Derby conducted after the completion of the historic track’s $121 million renovation. It also marked the fifth time in eight years that Derby attendance had surpassed 150,000.

Total wagering on the Kentucky Derby, which includes on-track and simulcast betting, soared to $118,426,874 - a gain of nearly 14 percent from the 2005 total of $103,985,374. The total shattered the North American record for wagering on a single race established in the 2005 Derby, which was the first race in North America to attract betting of more than $100 million.

Wagering from all sources on the 12-race Kentucky Derby Day card at Churchill Downs totaled $175,129,090 - an increase of more than 12 percent from 2005’s 12-race total of $155,840,495.

On-track wagering on the Kentucky Derby race totaled a record $12,075,504 - an increase of nearly 13 percent over last year’s total of $10,706,881. Betting at Churchill Downs on the entire 12-race program climbed to $24,463,927, a rise of more than seven percent over the 2005 Derby Day total of $10,706,881.

Kentucky Derby Day was also busy at Churchill Downs’ Trackside Louisville off-track betting facility. Trackside Louisville saw 9,562 patrons pass through its doors throughout Derby Day, a jump of nearly eight percent from the 8,885 that visited Trackside on Derby Day 2005.

Wagering on the Kentucky Derby race at Trackside totaled $1,180,011, an increase of 17 percent from the 2005 total of $1,008,849. A total of $1,783,599 was wagered on the Derby Day racing program at Trackside, a jump of just over 14 percent from the 2005 total of $1,563,578. Trackside Louisville attendance and wagering figures are not included in on-track attendance and wagering figures for Churchill Downs.
