Sorcerer's Stone Latest 3-Year-Old Off Derby Trail
By: Joel Cunningham

Sorcerer's Stone, winner of the Gr. III Arlington-Washington Futurity last fall at Arlington Park, was discovered to have a small ankle chip in his left foreleg that will sideline the Gulch colt for a couple of months, subsequently forcing him to miss the Kentucky Derby, trainer Pat Byrne announced on Tuesday.

The injury was believed to have occurred during a workout Friday morning at Gulfstream Park. It marks the second top contender to be knocked off the Derby trail due to an ankle injury in as many days, as Stevie Wonderboy was sidelined on Monday with a similar injury.

Sorcerer's Stone won his first three starts, which included an impressive 8 1/2-length run-away victory in the Arlington-Washington Futurity, and was regarded as one of the favorites going into the Gr. I Breeders' Cup Juvenile in October before turning in a disappointing sixth-place finish.

No decision has been made on whether surgery to remove the chip is necessary, but early indications are that Sorcerer's Stone may be ready to return to racing as early as summer according to Byrne.
