2001 World History:

The United States endured the worst terrorist attack in its history on Sept. 11, as hijacked passenger planes were flown into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The Pentagon in Washington, D.C. was also struck.

A "war on terrorism" was declared in Afghanistan as the United States, along with an international coalition, sought Islamic militant Osama bin Laden.

The nation's economy endured a dramatic slowdown, as manufacturing and dot-com woes spread throughout the economy in 2001.

2001 CD history:

Churchill Downs announced plans for a $127 million renovation and reconstruction of the track facilities, to be completed by Kentucky Derby 2005. The renovation included plans for 66 premium suites east of the Twin Spires, a year-round satellite wagering facility, and the installation of lights around the track. Preliminary construction on Phase I began in December.

Arlington Park was named the host site for the 19th Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, scheduled for Oct. 26, 2002.

William S. Farish, who had served as chairman of Churchill Downs Incorporated's board of directors since 1992, resigned to accept a nomination as the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Carl F. Pollard, a board member since 1985, was elected to succeed him as chairman.

On-track attendance for the 127th Kentucky Derby was again the second-highest in history, with 154,210 in attendance.
