Barbaro Update: Tuesday, May 23

Dr. Dean Richardson, lead surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center where Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is recovering from injuries sustained in the May 20 Preakness Stakes, spoke to the media this morning regarding the horse's condition. "He's actually better today than he was even yesterday, and he was pretty good yesterday," said Richardson, who led the surgical team that cared for Barbaro. "He's feeling very good. He's walking very well on the limb."

Barbaro, who sustained multiple fractures to his right hind leg in the opening quarter-mile of the Preakness, is resting comfortably in the intensive care unit at New Bolton and continues to receive round-the-clock care and observation.

Roy Jackson, who with his wife Gretchen bred and owns Barbaro, thanked many people for their part in the efforts to save the horse's life. Included in the lengthy list was jockey Edgar Brado, the staff at Pimlico Race Course, and the staff of the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa.

"We've run through the gamut of emotions from the Kentucky Derby of euphoria to the devastation of the Preakness in our family," he said. "I think we've gone through our own personal feelings. I think the sad part in Barbaro's case that the American public won't get a chance to see him continue his racing career.

"We hope all of you here will be able to see little Barbaros."

Richardson, however, again reminded those gathered that the horse is a long way from being out of the woods.

"I have tried to emphasize that bad things can happen at any time," Richardson said. "It will be few months before we know if this can even heal. Keeping him comfortable on his right hind limb is the most important thing we are looking for. We are basically doing good solid nursing care for the next several months."
