Churchill Downs To Ship Care Package To 2006 Kentucky Derby Winner Barbaro

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 30, 2006) - Churchill Downs team members will ship a large care package to 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro on Wednesday, May 31, at 1:30 p.m. The care package, which includes 12 giant "Get Well" cards signed by Churchill Downs race fans, will be sent to the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., where Barbaro is recovering from surgery to repair a leg injury he experienced in the May 20 Preakness Stakes.

Included in the care package are:

  • 12 six-foot-by-four-foot "Get Well" cards signed by thousands of Churchill Downs race fans;
  • A personalized Kentucky Derby 132 horse blanket signed with "get well" wishes from hundreds of Churchill Downs staff members;
  • A Barbaro Kentucky Derby scrapbook, including Derby week photos of Barbaro, news stories of Barbaro's Derby victory, and hundreds of "get well" e-mail messages from race fans; and
  • A large feed tub full of horse toys and treats for Barbaro and the other equine patients at the New Bolton Center.

    Media representatives wishing to take photographs or video of the care package as it is assembled and loaded for shipment to the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania may come to Churchill Downs Gate 1 at 1:30 p.m. EDT, where all items in the care package will be on display and a Churchill Downs spokesperson will be available for comment.
