Training for the media Derby week

Thursday, April 26, 2007

With all the media that arrives at Churchill Downs to cover the pre Derby activities of the contenders all of a sudden everyone is an expert on how these horses are training. Every workout is critiqued and analyzed bit by bit by a majority of people who have never even trained or ridden a horse. Sometimes trainers new to the Derby scene get overwhelmed and find they need to "train for the media". They see that one contender works five furlongs in 59 seconds and they send their horse out to work in 58 seconds because anything less would mean "something is not quite right " with their horse. Their horse will be compared constantly with other contenders or previous Derby runners. On the other end of the spectrum if a Derby horse works slowly or poorly to the eyes of all these experts the trainer is put in the position of saying "it was just what we were looking for, a maintenance work", knowing that this will all make the media and he will have to answer to questioning owners wondering why their horse didn't go as fast as another. Every move these contenders make is under the microscope of cameras and pens making it sometimes distracting to those responsible for preparing these Derby starters. But this is all part of what the Derby experience is, and yes I am one of those media, right in the mix with my critical eyes catching every step hoping I can see something in these horses  that may give me an edge at the betting windows on the first Saturday in May.

I Have 75th Anniversary Derby Memorbilia that I need to have appraised. Any information for this purpose will be appreciated. I know that this is off base for this Blog, but I have been unsuccessful in locating someone for this purpose. Thank You

I guess the answer to my question was no. Hard Spun ran a winning race. If Street Sense does not get a perfect trip....Hard Spun is the winner. Great ride by Calvin gets it done. Hard Spun and Roxy for the Preakness.....should be interesting.

Hi Jill,
This is just for fun...
I thought your readers might like to know about a free "horse race post time" ringtone for their cell phones.... several hundred Kentucky Derby enthusiasts, 781 to be exact, have sent me a thank you comment for creating this ringtone on phonezoo.zom... there is no monthly charge as there are with many ringtones... the only charge is for a nominal 10 of 25 cents for the text message.
Your readers can go to www.phonezoo.com and search for "horse race post time" ringtone, or search for fresnoflash... the ringtone is on my 3rd page.
There is nothing in this for me... I make no money... just providing a free service for Kentucky Horse Race Fans who do not already know about this free ringtone.

Jill,

Please cut through the stuff and tell me if my pick......Hard Spun.....did too much in the work.

I will do my best to keep you updated on the track, but remember, weather does play a factor at Churchill, so it can change daily.

Cherlokee is out of consideration for the KD with an abscess foot.

Jill

How about an update on the Oaks site and your Top 10 for the Oaks. Seems like there hasn't been any information or update for quite some time.

Being as the Oaks is just a week away your input would be appreciated.

Thanks ahead of time.

Hi Jill;

Great job love your educational blogs, which are greatly appreciated. In fact SS put in a bullet work at CD this past week.

My question is 4 prong, one what's your take about Rags To Riches getting the better of CQ in their recent work? Two, from your prospective Jill, and having a husband physically involved with horses, what are the implications if a horse doesn't appear to work well, meaning a slow to average workout, other than genuinely ordered by the Trainer?

Thirdly what's the backstretch buzz on "Curlin" it's your circuit he's there. We are all in the obsurity of the unknown with this Colt! Would it be safe to totally eliminate Curlin from our play?? Jill may we ask what your professional play would be here?? Curlin had Bucked Shins at age two, is he totally heeled or may that come back to haunt him?

Lastly a viewer asked when bio info would be available on Dominican, and we all noticed that Jill knows which buttoms to push, in order to satify our viewers request. Even though Chelokee is in the bubble, info on this colt maybe an asset including
all other candidates within 100K graded earnings range.

We repeat you are all doing an outstanding formidable job, and just a friendly reminder from a professional viewers standpoint, what we need to see, otherwise it becomes bias, that some contenders are posted while other runners are neglected.

Besides it's our duty to inform you directly because we want this sight to be a long term growing success! The Preakness is soon approaching too, thus it's healthy for your current and future Marketing & PR exposure, that shall only enhance optimum viewer ratings throughout the course of the Tripe Crown, and why not annually...

Thank you for addressing our questions and concerns, and I look forward to meeting you in the forthcoming future. Please send our best regards husband Patrick. Best of Luck!

Sincerely

Jill,

how about on update on how the track is playing leading up to oaks day?

Thanks Steven, I will keep you updated on the Derby horses on this Kentucky Derby website all week, so keep checking in.

Neil, I think it is just trainer preference and style. Tiago is lightly raced so they are probably looking for a bit more foundation and conditioning. Stormello is the iron horse who seems to thrive on hard training. The east coast trainers in general, except for the Jerkens family and a few others tend to stick to the five furlong works it seems. As far as your other question, unfortunately no, TVG will not be broadcasting the races Derby week, they can be seen on HRTV I believe.

One more thing I was wondering about and didnt know if you would be able to tell me. Is TVG going to be showing or broadcasting from Churchill this year? I saw HRTV had the rights now so I didnt know if both tracks were going to be showing or not.

Jill,

Don't really know what to take out of the works yet. Was wondering what you thought about the pattern at which these trainers are training. The east coast trainers (kentucky) seem to be putting in mostly 4 or 5 furlong works. (exception hard spun 1 mile) I have seen that the west coasters have been putting in longer works. (Tiago 7, Stormello 1 mile) Should we perceive that these trainers dont think that their horses can get a 1 1/4 mile or should we see it as an insurance work to be sure that they will have something left at the wire? I like both horses on the west coast, and like seeing longer works going into such a long race.

Also, is there any horse that we wouldnt be able to see that is impressing you more than the others? I keep hearing everything about street sense, but it's nothing new he loves CD.

Hope to hear what you have to say.

Neil

Variables,
20 horses, lost ground, track bias, bad trip, sloppy or fast, speed, stalker, closer, poly to dirt, just to list a few. There are (2) people, who's opinion I consider to be worthy during "Derby Week" - Yours Jill and Steve Haskin. The horse I've selected is allready cast in stone, but I do value the input you (2) share. Keep up the great work.
Derby #31 in a row,
Steve

I count on Steve Haskin every year to keep me posted, hes a writer for bloodhorse.com and believe you me he knows his stuff. He gives out alot of info on works trainers owners i mean everything....Only 9 more days and i got the derby fever and if i talk about it one more time to my fiance shes gonna kill me.....She just doesnt get it

What I try to glean from the media reports about workouts is observations that I am not there to see. The time is one thing, but how the horse did it is much more important. I did not get on Barbaro last year until the week of the Derby. I was skeptical of his ablities to handle a fast dirt track until I kept reading reports of his training and how he seemed to relish the track and seemed to do everything easily. This year, the most impressive thing I have read so far was how Street Sense galloped out well and then returned and was not even blowing hard. I have liked Street Sense for a while now and these reports are only reinforcing my opinion this year. While every 'capper knows to not over emphasize how a horse does in the morning (It is obviously more important how they do in the afternoon.), I would caution everyone NOT to ignore what goes on during training either and to utilize this info as ONE PIECE of the handicapping puzzle. The derby is about the only race where you can get this much information on that piece, so utilize it.

Not sure I found a question presented to the blogger in here Jill!.

So I will steal the show and start-off with a topic for the bloggers,

Let's talk LOGIC, the very thing which does not exist in HORSE RACING.

Defiant class of mammal, snobing their long noses at the LOGICAL OUTCOME.

We all look at the race track, workouts, jockeys, trainers, and the owners. Can't figure out why we look at the owners, they just pay the bills with my money and yours.

But we will include them, nevertheless.

The above are known as the premises.

The Principals of LOGIC – is to have a good argument validated, the premise or premises should state the facts for the conclusion. Better known as EVIDENCE to support the conclusion or outcome (WINNER). Of course a bad argument is simply, no premises led to the correct conclusion. (LOSER).

Jill workouts are like premises in the equation of LOGIC.

Bloggers, what does the premises tell us. Yes you can draw on prior years.
What work before should work again RIGHT!. This is HORSE RACING. Don’t count on it
