Waiting Game

Wednesday, May 02, 2007

In a matter of hours, we will know the names of the 20 horses that will run in the Kentucky Derby.

I have a crazy feeling there is going to be a surprise.

Xchanger's connections have said he is not going to be entered. Same with Slew's Tizzy. Same with Cobalt Blue. Same with Birdbirdistheword. But in the back of my mind is the thought that when I head over to the racing office later today to witness the pill pull that will determine the order for tonight's post position draw, I am going to hear the name of a horse that I did not expect to hear. Call me crazy. Call me whatever you want. But I can't shake this thought.

The good news for Teuflesberg is that it will take two surprise entrants to knock him out of the field. Imawildandcrazyguy is now the one standing on the edge of the cliff with the defection of Cobalt Blue yesterday.

At this hour, Reporting For Duty sits at #21 on the graded earnings list, and guess who will make it in if we have two last-minute defections. That's right. D. Wayne Lukas, who trains the horse at #22, Starbase.

Now, the waiting starts.

No surprises in the entry box. 22 horses were enteres. Reporting For Duty and Delightful Kiss were excluded. Starbase was not entered.

Starbase has a shot if he gets in. Both Hard Spun and Starbase were in outside post positions at Oaklawn for the March 17 Rebel Stakes and the track ate them up. Everone knows the success of Hard Spun after he left Oaklawn. The real story will be Starbase if he does the Derby. Beautiful horse, fabulous trainer.

one of pletchers will use the peterpan to prep for the belmont imo. he will have a fresh horse in derby, preakness, belmont

I think I am correct in saying that Baffert has an earnings eligible horse this year in Pirate {cant remember complete name} with 200K in graded money

Nick,

You're peobably right, but I just have this feeling.

I remember a few years ago Baffert pulling a surprise move and entering Danthebluegrassman at the last second. Then he scratched him the day before the race ran. That was an absolutely classless move on his part because he knew that he had no intentions on running Dan in the derby and it prevented another horse from getting a chance to run. Not going to be any surprises this year.
