Racecar Rhapsody Music To My Ears; Tomcito Worthy of Derby Berth
Tomcito before Florida Derby (GI): (Photo by: Adam Coglianese)
The only member of the 11-horse field we can take seriously as a potential major Derby player is Peruvian champion Tomcito. We’re not disparaging colts such as Atoned, Salute The Sarge or Racecar Rhapsody--our choice to win the race. At this point they appear a notch below the top Derby contenders. But the jury is still out on Tomcito. It’s not so much that he’s already won at the Kentucky Derby AND Belmont Stakes distances--pretty damn impressive, that--but there is the matter of his U.S. debut. It was very good. I’m well aware he was third, beaten by 12½ lengths by Big Brown and Smooth Air in the Florida Derby. But the race was run in 1:48 and a couple of ticks. And he came from last to be third, 3¼ lengths in front of Hey Byrn, who came back to win the Holy Bull last Saturday. In fact, the Florida Derby was key, producing two winners from two subsequent starters. Before the race, much was made of the fact that posts 11 and 12 were zero for life since the Gulfstream Park track was refigured. But how many horses win in Hallandale Beach coming from last of 12, last of anything for that matter? It might not be zero, but it’s pretty close. Today, Tomcito goes postward second-time Lasix for trainer Dante Zanelli. That’s never a bad thing. Jorge Chavez will ride him back; he must have learned something last time, right? And how about this? We’ve noticed that horses making their debuts on Polytrack run much better if they work fast on it. Not just good, but fast. After a maintenance breeze at Churchill Downs, presumably testing out that strip to find out what his energy level is coming out of South Florida, Zanelli shipped him to Keeneland and sent him a half-mile from the gate in :46 3/5. Not only was that move the best of 35 the morning of April 15--and remember that’s compared to most workers that have a run-up start--but it was the fifth fastest work at the distance by a three-year-old of the 134 to work all week. It should put him in the race a little sooner. Even on Polytrack, that’s never a bad thing. Keeneland this past week has been playing almost like a dirt track. Speed horses had a chance, if they were the best horse. Some even won, which hardly ever happens in Lexington anymore. With betting handle off double-digits, perhaps the word went out to tweak the surface a bit, giving speed types some chance instead of no chance at all. Tomcito needs to run well as he can use the graded earnings. And if he does earn his way into the race, it does two things: It gives the Derby another layer of mystery--like the 134th renewal needs one--and it would only help grow the legend of the undefeated upstart, Big Brown. Given his accomplishments, Tomcito deserves to be in the field more than a half dozen I could name, but won’t. They know who they are. I’ll likely wager on Racecar Rhapsody to win the Lexington if I can get at least early line odds of 9-2. I don’t think it’s outrageous to believe that if they ran 100 Lexingtons he could win 18 of them. Racecar Rhapsody is yet another member of this sophomore class that’s been competitive in graded company but hasn’t stepped up. But given his Equiform development line, he appears poised for a forward move in his second start following a layup. That start was a mid-move, semi-troubled, semi-short-of-condition fourth in Adriano’s Lane’s End, beaten four lengths. He should move forward off that, too. So, if I might steal a line from Cary Fotias, for me it will be Racecar Rhapsody for the Lexington money, with Tomcito the emotional hedge.

Nice article and well written. I couldn't agree more about Tomcito.

04/19/2008 3:52 pmTomcito before this week was supposed to be only a closer! Then, he works a half mile in the fastest time of 35! I think this horse can do it all. If he wins today, watch out in the derby, if he stays closer to the front he will catch big brown by 1 1/4!

04/19/2008 3:56 pmOh, and i hope Potato eats his tickets today, as he will not have Tomcito in the money! I hope you look like an idiot after the Lexington! Regardless of what tomcito does, you're still classless. You only wish you were Scripa and at the derby in your thousand dollar suit with a horse running.

04/20/2008 4:08 pmBad article and bad tip! Ryan, care to comment?
Mr. longshot, we may not be able to pick winners. Your in the same boat as well, but we know how to pick the loser.
I do not see any pari mutual cashing as I pick up the income tax tickets on Tomcito, and let me not be bias, also lost on Atoned.
So well call it a bad day.

04/20/2008 10:38 pmI wish Tomcito would have hit the board (preferably won). I met with the owners/trainer on raceday and must say they are great people and Tomcito looked fantastic. Hopefully, he will still make the field for the Derby.
Someone help me understand why (other than obvious reasons) Zayat Stables intends on running all of his horses? Seriously, none of them stand a chance in the Derby or even the Derby Trial for that matter. Here's to hoping he does right by his horses and keeps them where they belong (out of the Derby). Also, believe the earnings criteria needs revision. I have no problems with fillies taking on the boys, but think they should have to earn money against the boys in order to compete the first Saturday in May. Additionally, I think graded earnings at 3 should count more towards the Derby than earnings as a 2YO.
One last thing to vent - If both fillies are entered into the Derby, then scratched due to post position, I will be frustrated and disappointed. Sadly enough, there is no also eligible list and two deserving horses would be kept from running. Just my thoughts. Anyone else care to comment?

04/21/2008 3:43 amBad news, potato...
I hear that if Tomcito does not get into the Derby, and right now that looks like he will not, than he will be going up to Belmont to prep in the Peter Pan and then point to the Belmont at 12 panels. Tomcito ran against Peru horses and won a group 1 there at 12 panels, so it cannot be argued that he cannot get 12 furlongs.
Can he beat other horses to the wire at 12 panels? Who knows, but Tomcito was moving late but needed more track. Needs at least 10 panels.

04/21/2008 9:22 amTo all...( these are just our facts and no hyping here, so keep your bad comments to yourself...barry and potato had a bet they lost so at least I wont hear from them this week...but would welcome constructive comments though)....
First of all thanks for your support and good vibes.
We were at Keeneland this weekend with the family, so excited about Tomcito. We were at a suite and we hunged out with some of Darley's people including Dan Pride. They were rooting for Tomcito obviously (they own Street Cry and Street Sense).
Matt interviewed us on 58 flatt on TVG, Omar and myself were there (I was wearing the cap). We had a super time. we had a real high....until 5:42 pm....
We were farther back than what he had estimated and when Behindatthebar made his move, we tried to go with him, but simply we were not able. Tomcito did get moving very late in the stretch and made up 5 or 6 lengths in the shortened Keeneland straightaway only to get beaten by 3 3/4, after being 15 out of it in the back stretch...and the next horse was 6 lenghths behind us...
Chavez told us he dd not like the surface (everyone's excuse I guess...) and that he got going in the stretch because in the turn the horse was hesitating as he tried to get traction...Whatever it may be, we lost, but we cloesd ground and the time was very good...
Unfortunately, we sit at No. 22, if you throw the fillies, the LEx winner and salute the sarge...
Hopefully Zayat, aside from massive drama also calls Hello Najib out of the derby and give other owners a chance (whether us or someone else)...why run 3 of your horses, just run your top 2...but then I am biased with that comment...
We will ship to Churchill and sit tight. We think he will do better in that surface and over that distance. We are a longshot to make it and then a longshot to win it...but we dare to dream...closing argument, Gaicomo, even Charismatic were all dreamers and their dreams came true...
If we do not make the derby field, up to NY for the Belmont Stakes. We may use the Peter pan as prep for it, with the intention of winning, being a one turn mile, sandy track and wide turns, it should help us...
Well my friends, this is exactly where we stand...for now we play the waiting game...
Until further news..
best to all..

04/21/2008 9:24 amNow Now Now, Cp, have respect at the funeral please. We still have to mourn Tomcito lost.
Dearly beloved we are gather here! Oh wrong speech! But we can use it. It start off well!
Dearly beloved we are gather here! to mourn the lost of Tomcito, who raced well, and received great support from millions of racing fans in Peru and the U.S.
Tomcito we hope to see you return in the future, I am sure their are racing fans who will stay with you no matter how you perform. Win or Lose, your in their hearts and pockets.
But a word of caution, these so call dedicated fans are horse racing fans, and the most important aspect to their lives is their income. So currently you owe them income as they have lost twice, based on your main supporter Sripe marketing. It's extremely bad for your image to have someone talk on your behalf and mis-quote your abilities. The general public eventually dislike hearing with no mutual benefits.
I don't know how much longer they will appreciate the loses if they continue to mount. That's a personal issue for them to decide.
Here in America, we have an ancient saying, three strike and your out. It's a Baseball expression, widely used but pretty consistent and true in all of sports.
I can only imagine if you lose again, your out! So you have two loses thus far and both were non-threatening finishes 13 lengths out from the winner, and in less company, you finish 4 lengths out from the winner. Feeling th pressure, sure you are, I would be too! your on the main stage now, not like it was in Peru. Here is where you are broken or exalted to greatness, second place finisher are not remembers.
Don't be surprise if they stop telling you how great you are or were, based on your historical Peru performances against who? I don't have your profile in front of me at the moment. But it doesn't matter, I can't use the info with two loses thus far. I sure you can understand my position, you haven't given me much to work with either.
Loyalty should be earned, just not given openly without merit or achievement. It's a principal by which you can receive the highest admirations in any sport from our fans.
Therefore, our racing fans loyalty has been broken, when you do not re-invest into their pockets quickly.
Hear my ADVISE. Drop your PR guy or at least, give the guy severance pay and wish him well and start to take this horse race business seriously.
First, you shot high by running in a major nationally televised stakes event with no experience whatsoever. You know as well as I , Marketing does not pay the bills unless you have a product (talent)to support the advertisement. Small companies paying a million dollars for the prime time commercial spots with no products the consumer can desire constitutes as a bad marketing investment and future loss of customer loyalty.
Second you sought to ride on the notoriety again, by returning in stakes company again. Another Marketing ploy I presume. We have another expression by which we live!
You may fool me once, but if you fool me twice, shame on me! This is where we are today, Feeling a little shame for your performance?
You have the name kid, you have the racing fans heart, You even have the desire. I can see that, when you run. You try real hard to win.
But the main question, I have to ask you kid, "do you have the talent?"
Maybe we should try an open Allowance race. Nothing wrong with open Allowance races, we need a win somehow and soon.
Certainly you can retain your current ownership. I don't know how loyal these racing fans really are to you, but before your visit to me for advise, I do remember reading your most loyal marketing agent, publishing something about Dubai. Maybe, there was a possible sale pending, based on your performance. I keep those type of clips in a special folder called mis-investments Attempts or MIA's.
But certainly your not on there list anymore, your stock value has decrease tremendously, and you need to pay your increasing bills quickly. Oh what about the 100,000 dollars earned in the Florida Derby. Do you still have it? That will cover about 2-months worth of vet bills and high price living arrangements consider your still on the Derby trail. Let's not forget your marketing staff personal expenses. They will want to get there cut right off the top.
I get struggling artist in here all the time kid. Last year, it was Hard Spun. They wanted to fire the Jockey, I said to the owner and trainer, you have got to be kidding. Really, they were laying right on the sofa in the very spot your at.
They didn't listen and it cost them. Eventually they took my advise and at least won a respectable Grade 1.
The speech is the same for horses and humans alike!
Like I said, the only questions to be answered is "Whether you have the talent to succeed in this business?"
Take my advise kid, it a hard pill to swallow, but then again, thats why you are here.
Start low, and work your way up to the big leagues, then and only then, can you say, your have truly earned the right to be called a contender. If you can't win going against allowance horses, try the turf, you may find the grass to your liking.
Now I have another client,
That will 10,000 dollars consultation fee! see the filly outside the door. Make the check payable to Professor Thoroughbred, Inc.
Mrs. Indian Blessing, send in War Pass!, I know, I know Zito training hurt your left front leg. I don't believe we have a law suit about the training lately, after all he is the trainer. Come in and let's talk about it. Hold all my calls, this will be a long meeting for the champ. He got loads of money to spend, order out, and have that little filly name Indian Blessing bring it in here, It's time to think about stud duties.

Why don't you write a text book on all of Atoned's excuses while your at it. Wait!!! Maybe you shouldn't. Spare us with you useless, boring, never ending, wanna be KentuckyDerby.com analysis blogs. I think they make me less intelligent after reading them (I don't ever want to be a braindead sap like yourself). You act like you are really a handicapper! It must hurt inside knowing that you would never achieve a position higher in life than hot walking. Actually CDputz was telling me if you didn't get fired as hot walker you would have been promoted to parking valet. You will always be as good a handicapper as Horrible Hank Greenberg (even he didn't use Atoned and he is terrible!!!!). You also aren't a man of your word, but, neither is CDputz. At least cdputz's STS finished right behind Tomcito. Maybe some day you can be in charge of the classified section for Daily Racing Form. That's one section of the program you'd fit perfectly, cause no one ever looks at them, and we would never have to look at another one of your useless, brain cell wasting, steaming pile of horse %@#& blogs again.

04/22/2008 2:38 amsripa1212, let me ask you a serious question. Put everything aside my friend.
Has Tomcito ever drilled on the turf course yet? I honestly believe Tomcito is a turf horse. He will become a very good dirt horse later if he remains in racing at 4-5 years old.
I don't know if you are aware of another horse named Cougar II. He ran here in the U.S. in the early 70's. Tomcito reminds me so much concerning Cougar II. Similarities are astounding.
Cougar II was a Chile' bred horse imported much like Tomcito.
see the pedigree information http://www.pedigreequery.com/cougar2
What are the trainer thoughts concerning turf races with Tomcito in the future?
sripa1212
04/22/2008 10:07 amMr Barry Mitchel...
Thanks for your comment. We have not worked Tomcito on the grass yet. We are aware of his grass potential through his breeding with Street Cry and Dramatical on the Dam side.
Maybe grass could be in his future, but not at this time. We have met with darley several times over the last week and with their experience they advise that Tomcito will get better later in the year and at 4 as he appears to bee still in development muscularly speaking and still can fill up better.
They are hig on the horse, and we value their opinion. We sit 21 or 22 on the derby list and if we happen to amke , we will go. Not only for the experience but hopefully to try hard. Horseracing is a sport where all can happen, an maybe we will never have a horse at this level again, maybe we will have one n a few years. But right now we go with what we have. And we think he deserves a chance...
If we do not make it. We will nominate to the Peter Pan, with belmont in the mindset.
Thank you again for your recommendation.

Sniffle, sniffle, I think you are owed the nobel peace prize for that emotionally touching blog. Better yet an oscar. You could title the film "Toro! Toro! Hot Walker!" Hey you and Tony Robbins should do a tour together as useless blogging motivational speakers! I am so proud of Wimps Incorporated. Such a great story.
Sripa1212,
Stick to your guns, the Belmont. Turf later on down the road (there is plent of time for that). Not taking to poly track doesn't mean anything. That was a real good showing @ Gulfstream and I'm still pulling for your gang to get in the first saturday in may. Distance is key for Tomcito given the closing style nature of the horse. Also that long Belmont stretch to the finish will fit him perfectly. Good luck.

04/22/2008 8:43 pmSripe, good to hear the update. I think your colt will make it to the Derby. Most years, 1 or 2 will fall-out. Jones seems to hold the cards right now. I remember a blogger saying, if you don't run in any of the colt prep races, you should not be able to compete against the colts in the classic.
I agree. and this is one of the fallacy of the rules. I was also in favor of the point system in the prep races to qualify. To many colts simply show up at the last moments and expect to dance the big dance.
Nevertheless, your colt has perform well enough to earn a outside shot at running in the Derby.
Mikehaircut, blah. I am ashame of you. Simply stated, so there is no misunderstanding.
I neither require your approval or advise. Keep it to yourself. When you learn something new, please share your thoughts! and be positive, its healthy for you. Muuuuuuusa! Muuuuuuusa!
