Quickie for a Quickie
So just a short snort from way out west:
Word out of Santa Anita today is that Bob Black Jack is a Derby go. Hmmmmm. Do you think he might be up near the front early? Ah, just because he currently holds the world record for six furlongs; just because he’s adding blinkers for his Kentucky jaunt; just because he gets one of the great gate riders – David Flores – back on board, well….
His trainer -- 33-year-old James Kasparoff – says the Santa Anita Derby runner-up “…will work a half-mile Monday in company with one of my horses. We’re going to try some blinkers on him just to make sure he’s not too aggressive with them. As long as he can get in the (Kentucky) Derby, he’s going to go. I intend to take him as long as he qualifies in graded earnings.”
Right now Bob Black Jack has $180K in graded stakes earnings and sits at #20 on the Churchill eligible list. There are four or five ahead of him who are virtual cinches not to run, while there are four or five below him who might jump up with big runs this weekend. In the end, it looks like a wash and the son of Stormy Jack, a late-running sprinter who in turn was sired by Bertrando, is a very likely go in Louisville.
Can he get a mile and a quarter without any water?
“The horse will do fine going a mile and a quarter,” Kasparoff said. “He’ll have no problem going a mile and a quarter. He got a mile and a sixteenth (3rd to Georgie Boy in the San Felipe); he got a mile and an eighth (behind Colonel John in the Santa Anita Derby), and he was finishing in that race. Colonel John was life and death to get him. He had to give everything he had, and he didn’t start running until he got outside. We were finishing; we weren’t crawling home, so a mile and a quarter won’t be a problem.”
So there you go. The plot thickens; the stew turns to burgoo; and Kentucky in the spring is not for the weak of heart.
Will someone please tell the War Pass, Recapturetheglory and Big Brown people they may want to double knot their horseshoes.

04/11/2008 6:03 pmMac, interesting. I guess someone had to come from the West Coast. That world record ddeserves and asterisk more than any record by any baseball player ever. Big Brown's people, after watching Kip Deville rip the field to pieces today in the Maker's Mark Mile, should not care, because Big Brown is not pace dependent and does not need the lead. Get used to the IEAH silks, they are rolling right now. Hopefully Big Brown runs a similar style to Kip Deville does in his mile races, tactically placed up near the front, off the pace, then dominate and let no one pass in through the lane, running too fast for anyone to close no matter how fast they are because there is just too much ground to make up.

04/11/2008 9:39 pmIm guessing Bob Black Jack will probalbly get in and im actually glad cause i like him, i think he runs profesionally and is a very gutsy horse (Always puts up a fight). Plus the field is made out of 20 horses an i really cant think of 20 better than him.
On another matter whats your top 10 pick mac?

If I had to pick just one right now, it might be Pyro. But check with me after that little tilt at Keeneland tomorrow. If you allowed me another, Colonel John would catch my fancy. Meanwhile, Gayego and Adriano make me pause and wonder.
Am I allowed any more?

04/12/2008 10:12 pmMac, I think we are going to have a West Coast Kentucky Derby winner.
I also, believe he just might inherit the favorite position.
I don't see the Kentucky Derby favorite below 3-1 this year.
Handicapper dream!

04/13/2008 2:40 pmGuess you will be changing Pyro now. Ill tell you im on the Big Brown Bandwagon, last year street Scense won with only two preps and broke the Juvenile Jinx, maybe this year big brown steps up this year. I do belive tomcito can hit the board if the race sets up well for him. i Also like Yankee bravo and i have this feeling the champ War pass may step up in the kentucky derby.

04/13/2008 5:29 pmmy top 3 derby pick's changed many times finally come to this..YANKEE BRAVO,TOMCITO,COURT VISION,.look at YANKEE BRAVO\"S races and you will see trouble spot's. i personaly feel the dirt track at churchill moves this one way up past all the speed. patty G. a hell of a horseman has him primed and ready come may 3. bobbin and a weavin down the lane YANKEE BRAVO proves he's a champion. at what should be a nice price maybe 12-1 or higher.love the way he broke slowly twice and settled down charging down the lane, with all the speed in the derby, primes it up for a closer like YANKEE BRAVO and tomcito who excels in a long race.

04/13/2008 6:38 pmGuys, I hate to be throwing cold water, but you need to realize that Yankee Bravo has nowhere near the amount of graded stakes money he needs to run in the race. Further, Tomcito is light in that department, also, but could move into the field if he makes a good dent in the Lexington next weekend.

04/13/2008 7:34 pmnothing like cold water on a hot day, but were talking the derby, and yankee bravo will be in it.hate to burst your bubble,he's the one you'll see storming down the lane come the first saterday in may.

04/13/2008 10:26 pmUm, Yankee Bravo currently sits at number 36 (this is not taking out anyone not expected to run, like Proud Spell) on the list of contenders by graded stakes earnings with 105,000, and as far as I know, he's not running again, which means there'd have to be some serious defections before he could get in. Anything is possible, but 16 drop-outs this close? Not too likely. Not sure he wants 1 1/4 anyway. As for Tomcito, he's currently at number twenty-nine, and a good run this Saturday will get him in, so I sure hope he takes to the poly, because I really would love to see this horse on May 3rd.

04/14/2008 2:39 amTell them Mac. Tell them the truth! NO CHANCE for Yankee, Court Vision and definitely Tomcito! who!
Even if they draw a post position card someway. Don't take their picture in the paddock area, don't waste your film.
No Mac, Please tell them the truth! or their blood will be on your hands if you don't.
Now give them the truth! Colonel John is the horseplayer actions. I am thinking he should be favorite at 3-1, but you know those easterners, So add 10-1 plus 3-1 and you have 13-1, now minus 5-1 for winning the Santa Anita Derby and wha-la, 8-1 on the board. NICE!

04/14/2008 3:08 ambarry take your med's before it's too late, you wanted the truth now you have it,waste your money on colonel john all you want 3-1 5-1 8-1,theres no payout for 7th maybe 8th place,(maybe in vegas)

04/14/2008 11:04 amWow...I don't know how many times I have to say this...honestly...
If I hear Tomcito mentioned one more time I think I am going to puke. This horse has absolutely 0 chance of hitting the board on derby day. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be suprised if he missed the board in the Lexington Stakes.
With Salute the Sarge and Sporting Art in the field, chances are he won't even get the earnings to make the Derby.
Unbelievable!
Oh and notice how scripa has been completely silent on all blogs since the Florida Derby.

04/14/2008 7:12 pmWow.... This is Derby Fever at it's best. Alot of you have the fever, literally. Barry I thought you were stuck on El Gato Malo and now I see you like The Colonel, hmmmm...
The truth is this years Kentucky Derby is so wide open, many of us won't have our final picks until the day of the Derby. Personally I can pick out a solid one two for the top choice so I decided I will box five colts this year.
So far I have given you a few colts along the way in these blogs and at one point or another they have all made an impact. Starting with Colonel, Georgie Boy, Tale of Ekati, Momba, and I even gave out the Florida Superfecta. I blew out with Dennis but I am hoping for him to make amends. Having said all that the moment of truth, the moment when it comes time to seperate boys from young men has come.
Horses with upswing, I believe are Colonel John, Court Vision, Pyro, Big Brown, Tale of Ekati, Visionaire, Dennis of Cork and Recapture the Glory. I more than likely have the winner in one of the mentioned here but who??
I think The Colonel will be right there, I also feel Court Vision is the more mature for his connections and i favor him over Big Brown just on experience. Yes Big Brown is a freak of nature and probobly could be the best colt but he is still green and there is no room for that in the Derby. Can Big win it on raw talent alone? It remains to be seen. Connecions looking good and ready to fire on all cylynders also include, Tale of Ekati, Visionaire and Pyro. Hmmm??? I like when I talk it out... There's my final picks regardless of the Lexington...
1. Colonel John
2. Court Vision
3. Pyro
4. Tale of Ekati
5. Visionaire
No need to worry about earnings, surface, experinece, connections, jockies and all that good stuff. No question marks as far as I am concerned, just some racing luck.
good Lucj to you all,

04/15/2008 3:49 amSoCal your losing it my friend.. Mac was the El Gato Malo marketeer.
I have always been strictly Colonel John, just ask Mac! I tried to convince him not to play the EGM on Santa Anita Derby day.
I tell this as the truth, but you wont believe me.
CP, I am in a total agreement, Tomcito who!, he won't make the derby.
Won't hit the board in the Cool Lex, and if by some miracle, he gets a ticket to the big dance.
I won't be wasting any film in the paddock! I make sure my disposable camera only takes 18 shots. 2 of the winner (Colonel John) front shot and a back shot for posterity, got to see what everyone else will see at the finish line, (His Behind)
Oh and two blank shot of Tomcito who!
I sure scripe (deliberately misspelled)will have a lot to say real soon.
I could believe the prior comment from Mr. scripe, that PYRO was tossing a race before the Derby. The comment would closely resemble fixing horse racing and the general public wagers.
Maybe this is why he is so quite. Kinda nice though! the silents. He was hurting my ears.
