Todd Pletcher

Todd Pletcher

A native of Dallas, TX, Pletcher grew up around Thoroughbred racing as his father, Jake Pletcher, trained Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. After graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in animal science, he went to work for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. He stayed with Lukas for six years, eventually becoming his main East Coast assistant trainer.

A love of horses is a gift that passes down the generations of a family tree and becomes a family trait, a characteristic of which one is known. So it was with a great-grandfather from County Kilkenny in Ireland who was known to everyone locally as the man you referred to when a horse had to be purchased.

Pedigree Analysis

Lexington S. (G2) winner Behindatthebar has a decent mixture of speed and stamina in his pedigree, perhaps enough to think he can step up to run effectively at 1 1/4 miles, and his closing style also hints of a potential fondness for more distance. A more serious concern, arguably, is whether he will run to his best on dirt. He has never been worse than second in four starts on a synthetic surface, but ran fifth in his only start on dirt in the El Camino Real Derby (G3).
