Pedigree
Z Fortune is by Siphon (Brz), a Grade 1 winner in his native Brazil before being brought to America where his most important victories were the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) and the Santa Anita H. (G1), both over ten furlongs. Siphon possessed tremendous early speed and indeed both of these Grade 1 victories were achieved in dominating front-running fashion, a style which has been passed on to many of his offspring. Indeed Siphonic, from Siphon's very first crop, won Keeneland's Lanes End Breeders' Futurity (G2) going wire-to-wire. However, the stamina that Siphon possessed has not been passed on which was displayed when Siphonic faded to finish third after losing the lead in his next start, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). Runners by Siphon have an average winning distance of 6.6 furlongs and the stallion's second leading earner is I'm The Tiger who scored a wire-to-wire victory in the De Francis Memorial at Laurel over six furlongs.
Z Fortune's dam, Fortunate Faith was one of the best runners from the consistent sire of 27 stakes winners, Fortunate Prospect who beat Precisionist in the 1984 San Vincent and won 12 other sprints. Fortunate Faith won the Demoiselle S. (G2) over a mile and a eighth but the majority of her sire's leading earners were best over shorter distances and indeed the average winning distance of his offspring is 6.5 furlongs. As a broodmare sire Fortunate Prospect has also been successful, siring the dams of 19 black-type winners, the best of which is the good sprinter and sire, Successful Appeal. Prior to Z Fortune, Fortunate Faith has had five other foals to race of which four have won at an average distance of 6.9 furlongs with just one being successful at a distance of over one mile.
