BIG GLEN (Cactus Ridge) rallied boldly up the rail in deep stretch for a neck victory in Saturday's $100,000 Rushaway S., one of three listed events on the Lane's End S. (G2) undercard at Turfway Park. Trained by Frank Brothers, the three-year-old colt rated in midpack as 9-5 favorite Miner's Claim (Mineshaft) established the pace in :24 3/5, :49 and 1:13 3/5 while under pressure. The pacesetter shrugged off his early challengers at the top of the stretch and proved extremely game to the wire, but jockey Rene Douglas guided Big Glen to the inside in the final furlong and determinedly outfinished his rival. The chestnut ran 1 1/16 miles over the Polytrack in 1:44 2/5.

Sent off the 3-1 third choice, Big Glen paid $8.40, $4.20 and $2.80 while keying the $41.20 exacta. Miner's Claim was worth $3.60 and $2.60, and it was three lengths back to the 3-1 Icabad Crane (Jump Start), who yielded $2.80 for show. The trifecta totaled $123.20, and the 7-4-8-6 superfecta, with the 36-1 Cape of Storms (Cape Town) in fourth, returned $1,412.60. Targe (Monarchos), Tejanos Eliminator (Tejano Run), My Sea of Fire (Sea of Secrets), Acting Out (Exploit) and Holidaze (Harlan's Holiday) completed the order of finish.

Owned by John T.L. Jones Jr. and Bill Jones, Big Glen was bred in Kentucky by Jones Jr., Bill Heiligbrodt, Richard Taylor et al. He's out of the Peruvian stakes winner Zamba Canuta (Unaccounted For), who placed in a pair of U.S. stakes and is also the dam of an unnamed yearling filly by Songandaprayer. Big Glen opened 2008 with a victory in the W.E.B.N. S. at Turfway Park and entered the Rushaway off a fourth in the John Battaglia Memorial S. He's now four-for-five at Turfway. With Saturday's $59,520 payday, Big Glen has earned $123,611 from his 7-4-0-0 record.

Big Glen isn't nominated to the Triple Crown.

"Today he had a very good trip and showed guts to get there," Brothers commented. "This horse is a hard tryer. I don't know what will be next. We may take a look at the Lexington (G2) (at Keeneland on April 19)."
