Tuesday morning notes:
The cold and windy conditions weren't pleasant, but Tuesday was an exciting morning at the Downs as likely Kentucky Derby (G1) favorite BIG BROWN (Pulpit) made his first trip to the track after arriving from Florida late Monday afternoon. A smashing five-length winner of the Florida Derby (G1), the unbeaten colt is quite a presence. He moved spectacularly over the fast oval while galloping once around with his ears pricked, and the bay colt couldn't have looked any more relaxed.
Big Brown, who will blow out three furlongs on Thursday, figures to sway a lot of bettors into his corner based on his brilliant appearance, and that's a good thing if you believe the lightly raced colt is a vulnerable favorite. But nobody should be shocked to see him run his rivals into the ground on the front end. He's clearly a big-time talent (110 BRIS Speed rating in the Florida Derby) in a year where most of the contenders can been knocked for their low Speed ratings, and trainer Richard Dutrow is outspokenly predicting a win.
Dutrow has his critics, but a little bravado makes the build-up to the greatest two minutes in sports more interesting. Most trainers are very reserved, unwilling to say what they think, but Dutrow lays his cards on the table. He'll tell you that he has the best horse, is going to bet Big Brown with both hands, and plans on a wild celebration afterward. I've never been a big fan of D. Wayne Lukas, but I like the way he's cocky and brash. Horse racing needs personalities like any sport, and Dutrow isn't afraid to be controversial.
TALE OF EKATI (Tale of the Cat) was the only confirmed Derby starter to work Tuesday, breezing four furlongs in :49 2/5, but he was tossing his head during the drill and did not impress. The Wood (G1) winner is a light-framed horse who has had trouble breaking in the past, and he figures to get banged around in a 20-horse field.
COLONEL JOHN (Tiznow) and COURT VISION (Gulch) were on the track for a little exercise before the renovation break, and both continue to look good after working extremely well over the weekend.
I hope it's warmer tomorrow.
