James Scully's Morning Notes (April 30th, 2008)

Sunshine made the cold bearable on a beautiful morning at the Downs, and many of the Kentucky Derby (G1) contenders visited the track in preparation for the biggest day of their lives.
BIG BROWN (Boundary) was out early and continues to look terrific on the track, galloping once around the oval. He's very imposing and acted professionally despite wanting to do more under the exercise rider. Thursday's three-furlong breeze promises to be a big event.
COLONEL JOHN (Tiznow), the probable second choice in the wagering after Big Brown, was well-held early during his gallop and really extended his stride when allowed by the exercise rider. He's obviously training great and will draw plenty of support based on how he's handled the track at Churchill in advance of his dirt debut.
Z FORTUNE (Siphon [Brz]) appeared really content on the track while making a good appearance, and the Steve Asmussen-trained colt looks like a sleeper in my eyes.
PYRO (Pulpit) appears to be really coming on for Asmussen. He can be a little too eager on the track, but the classy colt knows what's going on and is a threat to run big if he gets the trip.
GAYEGO (Gilded Time) appeared to thrive over the muddy track when working last weekend, but I didn't like the way he moved during Wednesday's gallop.
COOL COAL MAN (Mineshaft) had an eventful morning, with another horse disrupting his gallop momentarily, but he wouldn't be one of my selections based on his appearances in recent days.
ADRIANO (A.P. Indy) turned a solid gallop, but he'll have to prove to me that he's a dirt horse.
SMOOTH AIR (Smooth Jazz) isn't the best horse to look at entering the track and was sick with a fever last week, but I liked what I saw from him on Wednesday. He appeared to be getting over the surface well, and the Florida Derby (G1) runner-up is a very honest performer (7-3-2-2 lifetime mark).
We'll wrap up the morning notes tomorrow.
