It’s time for a confession. When I saw that a horse was flying up the rail and was about to deny Pioneerof The Nile the Derby win that I predicted would be his, at first I had no idea who the horse was. It was clear the horse wore saddle towel #8. That was all I could tell you until I heard Tom Durkin identify the soon-to-be-winner as Mine That Bird with about 100 yards to go.

For only the second time since 1995 I will not be attending the Kentucky Derby in person. As I type this, I am on a plane headed to Las Vegas early Friday morning for a friend’s bachelor party. My emotions were mixed as the plane took off from Louisville just moments ago. On one hand, the center of the racing world is getting farther and farther behind me by the second.

Now that we know which horses are breaking from which post under which jockey, we can start to give thought to how our wagering will shake out. You really need to go horse by horse before you can come to any wagering conclusions, however. Superfan Meredith and I debated the merits of all 20 starters.

Just a fan that got very lucky and is able to maintain a blog about the Kentucky Derby for several months every year. A fan who gets to spend Derby Week in Louisville talking to owners, trainers, jockeys, clockers, and other members of the media.
