As you drive down Shelbyville Road in Louisville, you may never realize the opportunity you are passing by. It is waiting for you at Dee's Crafts... a palace of lace, ribbon, gems, feathers, sequins, and much more to decorate the hat of your choice.
As you well know, wearing a hat to the Kentucky Derby is a century-old tradition. Although Dee's Crafts has not been around since the late 1800's, they have made quite the name for themselves as far as offering designer hats and over 1000 unadorned hats for Dee's designers to create for Oaks or Derby. If interested in the latter, they have thousands of yards of ribbon, staff expertise, and not to mention, a "feather bar" for your design.
Annually, Dee's sends buyers to Manhattan to find the latest styles and colors to bring back to the store. The season of Derby hat designing started in January and ends with your masterpeice atop in the first weekend of May.

03/17 2:20 amNice, those beautiful ladies wearing fabulous hats.
I wonder, if the name Derby (Kentucky Derby!) comes from hats wore by the men?
Carolina do you have any insight?

03/17 11:03 amIt's probably the other way around.
In Epsom, England, a racing tradition began in 1661. In the summer of 1780 a race was organized by Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby and some of his friends to race their 3 yo fillies at a mile and half. Smith named it the Oaks for his estate. The race was a success and the next year they added in a race for the colts.
The Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury flipped a coin to name the race and the Earl of Derby won. So begun the inaugural running of the 'Derby' (Sir Charles Bunbury's horse Diomed won the race.)
(Information found on the Epsom Downs website: http://www.epsomderby.co.uk/History.ink)
There is a great history section on this website too. Check out the Derby Timeline.

Whereas the "Kentucky Derby" is the largest settlement of fans to see the best thoroughbreds in the world, according to the Kings.
Horse racing is the "Sport of Kings."
