One Line For The Pie

For only the second time since 1995 I will not be attending the Kentucky Derby in person. As I type this, I am on a plane headed to Las Vegas early Friday morning for a friend’s bachelor party. My emotions were mixed as the plane took off from Louisville just moments ago. On one hand, the center of the racing world is getting farther and farther behind me by the second. But on the other hand, for the third year in a row I was able to spend Derby Week among the key players of the game on the game’s largest stage as an official member of the racing media. Not only was it just as enjoyable as ever, but it was also very informative. Or at least, I feel it was informative. I guess we won’t know for sure until Saturday evening, will we?

The Kentucky Derby is everything that is great about horse racing. It’s a race that every entrant is legitimately trying to win, as opposed to using the race as a prep for something else. These days, with more graded stakes races than there are legitimate graded stakes horses, a race that is the ultimate goal for all of its runners is a rare thing. And from a wagering standpoint, how can you beat a 20-horse field with 10-12 win candidates? You can’t. Yes, the Kentucky Derby is the best that horse racing has to offer. And now that all the preps have been run and the field has been determined, all we can do is wait, wager, and watch.

With this many horses in the race, a bettor is required to take multiple stands against contenders that he or she might otherwise endorse with confidence on a normal day. Even if you only identify seven or eight potential winners, some must be eliminated if you wish to capture your share of the wagering pie. I refer to this process of elimination as drawing a line. Not necessarily a line through a horse or horses, but rather a line above them. The single line represents the point where my inclusion for wagering purposes stops. Those above the line are the ones I play. Those below are the ones I really, really hope don’t burn me. Some horses end up below the line because they aren’t good enough. Some because there was a question mark of variable size next to the horse’s name and that question mark brought all the doubt I needed with it.

Some very nice horses who ended up below the line for me this year are as follows:

Dunkirk- The lack of two-year-old foundation makes it impossible for me to bet on him with confidence.

Friesan Fire- Neither the seven-week layoff nor the lack of a race past 1 1/16th miles disqualifies him independently. But if you put them together, you have a horse I can’t use. There is no doubt that he has a legitimate chance, however.

Papa Clem- My gut feeling on him is that he’s just half a notch below a few of the others.

General Quarters- Mixed reviews of his workouts and my concerns about his class have him not as high as others on my list of contenders.

Musket Man- See “General Quarters.”

West Side Bernie- This one has every right to be running well at the end, but I think he would need too many others to regress in order to win.

The horses who I feel just are not good enough to be a factor in the Kentucky Derby are:

Advice- Even though he seems to be getting good at the right time, he looks like he’s at a major class disadvantage, and probably isn’t bred for this distance.

Mine That Bird- A board finish would truly come from out of nowhere, as this horse has never shown the ability to be competitive against the likes of this field.

Flying Private- Yes, he’s trained by D. Wayne Lukas. But that is literally all he brings to the wagering table.

Mr. Hot Stuff- While there is probably a graded stakes race somewhere with his name on it, I can’t see this being the spot.

Atomic Rain- His only hope is if the race completely falls apart and several of the better horses don’t fire anything close to their best shot.

Join in the Dance- He really should be totally spent after ¾ of a mile.

Summer Bird- While I think he’s the best of the hopeless longshots, he’s still hopeless.

Nowhere to Hide- I respect Nick Zito, but this horse has never run anywhere close to the kind of race it would take for him to hit the board.

That leaves six horses. They are I Want Revenge, Desert Party, Hold Me Back, Regal Ransom, Chocolate Candy, and my pick to win the Kentucky Derby, Pioneerof The Nile.

It is truly impossible for me to argue with anyone who has chosen to throw out Pioneerof The Nile. We all know how hard it is to dismiss some of the top contenders. And when you consider that Pioneerof The Nile has never raced on dirt, began his career with two races on turf, and has never run a fast speed figure, Pioneerof The Nile is a logical toss. In fact, I would argue that it is easier to form a negative opinion on Pioneerof The Nile than it is for just about any of the main contenders. The evidence against him has been handed to the bettors on a silver platter. I’m simply taking a different position on the horse. While many have drawn a line through him or above him, I have placed him on top of them all.

Pioneerof The Nile has shown me a rare amount of talent this year. Sure, others have run impressive races. But the way Pioneerof The Nile has won his three starts in 2009 tells me his level of talent is something we don’t see every year. He’s won his races by doing what needed to be done, no matter what was thrown his way early or late. He’s looked very impressive on the Churchill Downs dirt all week, and the team in his corner also inspires confidence. I will be playing Pioneerof The Nile to win, and I will use him on top in all of my wagers.

There is no doubt that I Want Revenge is a major threat to win as well. Since moving to the dirt he’s been ultra-impressive. And I have seen nor heard anything this week that tells me he won’t turn in a top effort.

Hold Me Back has also looked good according to professional workout observers. So has Regal Ransom. Word on the street is that Chocolate Candy will run big over a wet track. And Desert Party looked good all week long, although by some accounts he wasn’t his normal self on Thursday. Keep your eye on him in the remaining hours before post time.

My wagers (subject to change):

Win Bet: Pioneerof The Nile

Main Exacta Box: Pioneerof The Nile, Regal Ransom, Hold Me Back, I Want Revenge

Smaller Exacta Box: Those 4 plus Chocolate Candy and Desert Party

Trifecta Box: POTN, RR, HMB, IWR, DP, and CC

It has been more fun than you can possibly imagine maintaining this blog with all of you this year. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone who has made this the most read and commented on horse racing blog anywhere on the internet.

Until next time.

Justin,
Interesting that you added Dunkirk on 3rd Street and General Quarters and Papa Clem on 4th Street.
Since I have been following your blog all season, I must now say, "Au Contraire Mon Fraire."

I was pulling for Pioneer of the Nile until he got an outside post...now there is the "Papa" problem, to wit: last time they raced, Pioneer only beat Papa Clem by 1/2 length. Now, Pioneer is spotting Papa Clem that 1/2 length right at the start by his post position and Pioneer will still have to negotiate through horses to get to the middle as well (plus Papa now has dirt experience).

I am just saying, because of the post position, I would rather have Papa Clem than Pioneer. And, since I would be adding Papa Clem, I would also have to add Friesan Fire.

So, I will try this exacta against yours: Papa Clem, Friesan Fire, Dunkirk, and I want Revenge.

I've loaded up on 13 and 15. If 6 wins I'm still making a profit and depending on exotics, would love to 5, 11 or 12 win too. Any of those scenario's would be nice but if 13 fades for 2nd or 3rd, that's when I really get happy. I also have pool 1 tickets on 1 and 16 but those don't count, do they?
So...I want 13 out there winging it, prominent the whole way and if he gets gunned down, I'll meet you at the IRS window...I guess he's also eligible to rally for 3rd place so I'm starting to like this bet.
No more chatter from me, I'm not around tomorrow. To Justin: let's keep this momentum and knowledge inside this forum going all summer into the BC. To the regulars DF78, FRB, Barry, law, best of luck.

First, I'm sure this will be our last Kentucky Derby Blog for the year. So I want to say to all my Family here.

We are the BEST at what we do! and will continue to make the name of Justin Dew blog the GREATEST PLACE TO SHARE OUR MINDS.

Justin, take care! and be well. Enjoy the trip to Vegas, but as you know, its nothing like the Kentucky Derby up close and personal. So I fell you, even though it is for a great cause you had to go.

JOKE OF THE DAY! DON'T PULL OUT YOUR LITTLE PINK LAPTOP IN THE CASINO! WRONG MESSAGE TO SEND. AT LEAST KEEP IT IN THE CARRY CASE OR SOMETHING.

WAIT, DO THEY EVEN ALLOW LAPTOP ON THE GAMBLING FLOOR? ( I DON'T THINK SO)

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO LIVE POST FROM TWITTER? DO YOU HAVE A LITTLE PINK CELL PHONE ALSO?

LOL!

Justin,

I feel for you.I also made a gut wrenching decision on not attending the Derby this year. Many factors came into play and I unfortunately will not be there. This would have marked my 20th consecutive year. I know I'll still tear up during My Old Kentucky Home while watching on TV, and when those "8 Belles" toll this year, that will be an emotional moment.

Thanks to all the bloggers, I posted some, but mostly enjoyed reading all the insight.

As for my pick, sometimes the obvious gets overlooked. I WANT REVENGE.

To finish on a positive note, 2 words Rachel Alexandra! That was jaw-dropping to watch.

Good Luck to all.

So for whatever reason I haven't been able to get on since the new moderation has come up but... After placing my O/D Double bet 5,6/2,6,16 i'm glad to know that i'll be getting half of my wager back and will at least get paid back for my Double (my original intent was to try to beat RA while still having back up cover). Frustrating that JWD scratched out since i was really hoping my wager would be to beat her but glad to know some people decided try.

Justin, good luck, you really can see more of the race on TV, and Vegas will be a great place to celebrate a victory. Good luck to everyone, who do you all like in the Woodford if it comes OFF the TURF? I'm thinking the distance is perfect for Cowboy Cal, and I'm not sure the other speed is as legit as he is. Hopefully it stays on the Turf I have a Rachel Zambezi Sun FF/HMB pick 3 going and would like to see Zambezi Sun run on the turf if at all possible. I also like Dawn After Dawn and Sugar Mint in the first leg of the pick 4. Check out video of their races if you can before tossing them. In Leg B I like the 2 favorites and Royale Michele...I'd love to hear some more ideas about the pick 4. I don't think I'll let Gomez beat me in any leg of the pick 4.

Good luck this should be a great race, rain or shine.

It's probably a little late in the process to be raising these questions, but here are some fun, albeit late, questions anyway.

1.) Is Pioneerof The Nile's name a typo? Same question about Presious Passion, but he's not even competing today.

2.) Why are people betting the third and fourth string Dubai horses? They ran and won their races by default. Vineyard Haven was a logical contender coming in, threw in a clunker in Dubai and was shelved. How does this make any sense whatsoever?

3.) D. Wayne might have a live one here. When last seen he was Flying First Class, now he's Flying Private. If Flying Private loses, look for him to show up next with Beam Me Up Scottie.

4.) I understand the graded earnings method of qualifying for the Derby, but shouldn't at least finishing In the Money in at least 1 graded stake at 2 or 3 be a minimum requirement for entering? I'm looking at you Nowhere To Hide. I bet you when you ran the last two times and you didn't make the cut. What the heck are you doing Here??

5.) What is the most common first letter in the name of the Derby winner? S. Summer Bird is the only one that fits that criteria this time around. I'm just sayin'...

6.) Need a GOP exacta box? How about Musket Man and I Want Revenge. Take THAT Mr. President :)

I'm on the Fire as well. Takes a pretty special critter to sweep those three races in the bayou. Count me in on Chocolate Candy too. I think he runs big today and Hollendorfer gets some love. Nevertheless, after yesterday I would have tabbed Rachel to win this one. I haven't been so blown away by a filly since Serena's Song won the Beam. Too bad that one ended up being a rabbit in the Derby.

General Quarters at 5-1 is pretty ugly. Some of that is local money but some is also Leparoux who gets bet heavily on a regular basis at CD. Have to figure he'll drift upwards although I'd consider anything in single digits to still be a pretty serious underlay. The hoss ran for a $20,000 claiming tag, is trained by a retired school principal who has dabbled in horses and didn't put in a serious work the entire week before the Derby. I've passed on others in the past which had more upside than this one.

Really hoping all of the buzz about Desert Party and Regal Ransom gets those two pounded today. They may beat me but I like my hand a whole lot better so I'm all in.

Enjoyed reading all the comments this year. I'm wiser, and wealthier, for the effort. Good luck y'all.

MINE THAT BIRD may come positive after the lab test results, I do not know if in that case
The new Drug regulation law (Steroids free) will give POTN first, MM second, PC third, CC fourth etc.
In my Opinion J. Mullins scratched IWR because of the new Drug regulation law (Steroids free). People already collected their money, but I guess they can take the money away from the owners and penalize the trainer. Mine that Bird give me some money as a 24 for pools 1 and 2 and future exactas. I do not know, but the way Borel rode this horse to the finish line at very high speed has many questions to be answered later on. I just hope that this horse won the 135 Kentucky Derby legally.

Mine the bird won fair and square, an off track can have certain wierd results, a perfect ride and a lot of luck. Thats gambling, No need for crying in our beer we got beat by the better horse today, run the race 10 more times and he doesn't hit hte top 5 again. Sucks but that is the facts.

eden001,

how can you say that the way mine that bird came home so fast is suspicious or drug enhanced. When a horse gallops the first mile or so of the race in dead last, I would hope he'd have a full tank in the stretch while the rest of the horses were running hard the first mile of the race. I 'm not a fan of the horse at all!!! but you can't knock Borel's tactics and the ride he gave the horse.

Tough run of luck for Friesan Fire fans this year. With both Quality Road and IWR out, he ends up the 7-2 favorite. Then he grabbed a quarter coming out of the gate and his race was over before it had even begun. At least he's safe. Cindy Jones said this morning nothing was wrong that couldn't be fixed but he's out of the Preakness. Real bad luck for those who had bet Derby on Oaks day; however, IWR betters could at least get a refund which was a lot better deal than Friesan Fire supporters got but that's hoss racin'.

Give Calvin all the credit in the world. That was one sweet ride. I didn't notice the rail playing that way all day but Calvin sure did. He had Mine That Bird just where he needed to be all the way around. I never gave the horse a first thought, must less a second one. Doesn't matter now as he's the champ and deserves it. The connections were so shocked by the win themselves they apparently hadn't even thought about Baltimore.

Good job by POTN and Musket Man supporters and good luck in the Preakness and Belmont.

Me and some friends had the next 4 horses in our trifecta. It was numbing to have it all taken away at the last moment. I thought there was no way we could lose...but there, from the inside, came Mine That Bird. One of my friends was mad at the rest of us because everyone besides him was laughing. He said, "We just lost a chance at a lot of money!" I said, "We handicapped the race right...we picked only 6 horses and 4 of them finished right behind MIne That Bird. We got it right, but that's horseracing!" I think the result was cool. I lost, but it was neat just the same.

Wow! Justin, leave right before the best two days at Churchill? Where are your priorities? That would be like a nightmare that I would hate to not wake up from. Been to several bachlor parties before and even though this one was in Vegas. Still a easy call for me. OAKS-DERBY double baby....

Oh, well. My top pick IWR was scratched but Musket Man my second pick ran a huge race. He out ran his breeding like I figured he would. Just didn't play Mine that Bird in anything. Who could seriously handicap this race and like him is beyond me. Musket Man should have ran second if not for POTN swerving out. Suprised there was not an objection. POTN was ver leg weary.
