Pedigree

Papa Clem is by Smart Strike, the leading sire for the past two years, whose offspring have shown an immense amount of versatility. A half-brother to Canadian Triple Crown winner and Hall of Fame filly Dance Smartly (Danzig), Smart Strike won six of his eight career starts, earning his signature victory in the nine-furlong Philip H. Iselin H. (G1) in 1996.

Starter Analysis

Arkansas Derby (G2) winner Papa Clem is one of the many entrants who began their career on the West Coast. Conditioned by Gary Stute, the fleet colt has very good early speed, but showed that he can come from off the pace at Oaklawn Park most recently. The win contender has never been worse than second going two turns and retains West Coast king Rafael Bejarano for this journey.

Connections

Gary Stute

Gary Stute, 52, has training in his blood. His father Mel has been a fixture on the Southern California circuit for decades, conditioning such standouts as champion Snow Chief, hero of the 1986 Preakness S. (G1); champion Brave Raj, victorious in the 1986 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1); and the speedy filly Very Subtle, who defeated males in the 1987 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1). // Full Bio ›

Bejarano

Rafael Bejarano

Rafael Bejarano, born June 23, 1982, in Peru, went to the races as a child in his home country and became enamored of the sport. He eventually attended his nation's riding school, grooming horses to earn his tuition money. He began riding in Peru in 1999 and won an apprentice title in his first year in the saddle. // Full Bio ›
