Pedigree

Summer Bird's pedigree is shot through with Kentucky Derby (G1) connections. He is by millionaire Birdstone, who carved out a permanent niche in racing history by foiling Smarty Jones' Triple Crown bid in the 2004 Belmont S. (G1). A son of 1996 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Grindstone, and a grandson of 1990 Derby hero Unbridled, Birdstone stamped himself as a classic contender when capturing the Champagne S. (G1) at two. Unfortunately, the spring of his three-year-old season did not go according to plan, and he could manage only eighth in the Run for the Roses.

Starter Analysis

Chestnut colt came out of nowhere to finish a big third in the Arkansas Derby (G2) off a maiden score for conditioner Tim Ice, who just began training last year. Summer Bird has earned huge BRIS Late Pace ratings in each of his three tries to date and should have further improvement in him as a lightly raced sophomore.

Connections

Tim Ice

Tim Ice, 34, just opened his own stable last summer, and is going to the Kentucky Derby (G1) in his first year as a trainer. Ice learned his craft by serving as an assistant to several well-known trainers for the past 10 years, working for Keith Desormeaux, Cole Norman and Morris Nicks. // Full Bio ›

Chris Rosier

Chris Rosier had never ridden in a graded stakes race before the Arkansas Derby (G2), when he guided Summer Bird to a rallying third-place finish, and now he is headed to the biggest stage of all in the Kentucky Derby (G1). // Full Bio ›
